Acceptable Amount of Serrations?

I just posted this in the Blade Discussion section but I figured I'd put it here too. :)

If you were looking for serrations in a working knife what would be the ideal amount of serrations to have? Is 50% the best amount? Would less than 50% suffice if the folder were a large one? I'm assuming here that at least some of the blade should be plain edged for tasks requiring it such as scraping, etc.

Can a blade be serrated anywhere other than just the at the beginning? Can you have a blade that's 33% plain edged followed by 33% serrated in the middle and then plain edged to the tip?

This isn't the answer you are looking for Peter but my 0.02 is:

There are several things that have brought this country to it's current low state.

1.Two way radio systems for police departments.
2.Interstate Highways.
3.Computers in the hands of the government.
4.California
5.Better health care for people I dislike,
And
6. Serrations on knives!

;) Serrations do have their place Peter, and despite what George Tichborne says, they could even be useful on a knife other than a bread knife! :p

Well I'm not into the whole "micro serration" thing. I want real serrations that will dig into and bite at a peice of rope, and or saw through things like tree limbs and plastic pipe. I also want a highly polished smooth edge for slicing. And you can get it all in one blade it just has to be decent sized. I'd say any knife under 3" should be all or none. Over three inches and you can start playing around with different ratios. When you get up there around 4" and up I'd say 60% plain 40% serrated or 50/50 is pretty good. You need a useable amount of both. The bigger the blade the smaller the percentage of serrated.
If possible, I like the majority of the blade to be plain, but about 1.5" of serrations or more is good. If they're sharpened right, you can cut most rope with one pass, and have plenty of plain edge to work with for other cutting.

AMEN Peter!

While I will admit that serations have the ability to saw through materials, They will not be found on any knife I cary. I have worked in consturction, grew up on a dairy farm, spent 4 years in the USMC, put up cell towers, worked as a welder, worked offshore, worked as a truck driver, serviced and installed signs, been a machanic, and basicly a "Jack of all trades". I have never found a good reason for serations, and infact have found them to be a hinderance. And while some people may like serations, I hate them with a passion.  :barf:

To each his own I guess, but for me, the combination is 0/0, no serations.

I too prefer plain edges, but have found serrations handy at times. At those times, I would just as soon the whole blade be serrated.
As Will said : "to each his own"
By the way; what's wrong with Calif:cool:rnia?
