Accident Victim Cut Out With Knife

One of the kids who survived the plane crash in Michigan was cut out of an upside-down seatbelt suspension by a pocketknife, as well.

Sending this back to the top for the attention it deserves

Quoting the article:

"Officer Goodwin said she will use the NBC 7/39 video of the crash to teach people an important lesson. “If they have any doubt that a seatbelt saves lives or that they should buckle up their child in a baby seat, I’m going to show them that this is why you wear your seatbelt, and this is why you put your child in a safety seat,” she said."

A big "amen" to that, but why didn't she mention that you ought to have an accessible knife available, too?

Charles,Your right about those suv's they make up a disproportional number of wrecks I respond to when its icy and snowy.I have had people actually tell me things like "but I had it in 4 wheel drive"We think of suv's as job security.
I would never cut someone out and MOVE them if their life was not in danger from fire, other cars hitting the wreck ect.Theres a reason we assess, treat, and package a victim before they are moved, you can cause further harm if you don't.You won't be a hero, but maybe a defendant.

This story represents a very good reason why everyone should carry a knife.

Knives and guns get a bad rap. The few bad things done with knives and guns are far outweight by the good things.

We use knives, often large ones in our kitchens everyday, and yet may people panic at the sight of a pocketknife in public.

Knives are tools pure and simple, but like nearly every other object (such as keys, pens, pencils, nail files, rolling pins, frying pans, bats, garden tools, etc.), can, be used as a weapon.

It would not surprise me, that if the person who had done the cutting if the car seat out of that wrecked vehicle, had been arrested for some offense, that LEO would have commented "and the suspect had a knife on him!" or words to that effect.

Your survival knife is the knife you have on you when a survival situation arises.

This reminds me of an incident I saw reenacted on TV last year...don't remember where. In it, a woman had been told to stop her car because it was a construction area. The was rear-ended hard by a truck, and her car caught fire. Her seatbelt jammed, and in spite of efforts of some workers to free her, she burnt to death in her car.

I was shocked not one person on that construction crew that went to help her had a knife on them, even a Buck on their belt, a Leatherman, or just a little pen knife. Or if they did, they never thought to use it.

People think of knives as sinister weapons used by psychos, but never consider they could be life-saving tools.
