Accidental Cuts Theory

Over the years of using and playing with folders I've managed to cut myself several times, fortunately nothing serious. Pondering this the other day I realised nearly all the accidents happened using large folders,Spyderco Military being the smallest. Having small hands for a man it got me thinking that large folders arn't the best choice. Having said that I love my large folders and havn't been dumb enough to let the same knife bite me twice. You always seem to remember the ones that cut you. Never cut myself with an Endura and after reading a lot of users comments, thinking a Para Military might be my perfect EDC,

We all need to find the correct size, shape, and make of knives for our individual hands and needs.

My own theory about accidental cuts is that they are mainly due to the following causes:

1) Carelessness, using the knife without full attention on the task at hand.

2) Playing with sharp knives, as opposed to using them to cut stuff.

3) Alcohol.

Very good Bill except I would put alcohol at #1.

I've never cut myself closing a folder its always been while opening the blade. Not sure why this is.

Yep. Just a couple weeks ago, I cut myself badly, nearly to the bone, during a seminar at work. It was unbelievably dumb, and fits into the category (1) above. Just being careless, trying to open a snack bag that wouldn't tear open, slipped and cut myself so bad that I had to go and get stitches. It was a real gusher. I've only cut myself like that a couple of times in my life, it kinda' surprised me.

Inattention and overconfidence are the worst offenders for me.

I've avoided even minor cuts for a while. Then last night, I was thinking about how to wrap paracord on my Buck Paklite, turning the knife over. I tipped a bit and barely touched the back of a finger. Cut -- though not much worse than a small paper cut. Just annoying. Then, as I'm looking at the EKA 8 I planned to take to work tomorrow (i.e., today), it slipped over in the same way and cut another finger on the same hand. Again, a small paper cut-like slit.

Stupidly inattentive.

I hate this thread.

A couple weeks ago i did this:

I wasn't careless. I wasn't playing and i wasn't drunk.
It was the knives fault.:D

Main reason for cuts is a combination of over confidence (lock, skill whatever), and lack of judgement or skill

I have medium-sized hands and I strongly prefer large folders (4" and up), though my PM2 hasn't left my side in weeks. Looking back, most of my cuts have been with smaller knives, my most recent being a Twitch II (under 3"), so I don't think size has much to do with it. I don't drink alcohol; all of my cuts have been due to carelessness or slippery hands.

Well, when I was little I was building a model, using an old traditional, non-locking folder to trim plastic. Whatever I did the GD thing closed up on my thumb and nearly cut my finger off.

That was it-I never used another folder that doesn't lock, and never will.

The recent stupid thing I did was during the process of working some lube into a knockoff OTF knife and fired it with my left thumb partially in the way-cut me clean and deep, thought I was gonna need stitches but the cut was so clean I just bandaged it after the requisite cleaning. Inattention 1, me 0. No ETOH involved, I don't drink. That is, I bandaged it after I made cussing an elevated art form!

I'll manage to cut myself from all of the mentioned reasons.

However the most common ones are just from not paying attention to the sharp piece of steel I'm using.

My current knife is an assisted opening BM 790 Subrosa, my first AO. It cut me lots of times when I first got it. I don't think ill ever get another AO.

Never did have to get stitches tho. Most of them are just smallish cuts

I thought that I had large hands, but I find that I cannot close my new Manix2 when keeping my fingers out of the way of the closing blade. The "heel" of the handle is too long to fit into my palm, so I cannot get a proper supported grip on the ball-joint lock in order to unlock it safely. The overall length of the open knife is about 8", about one inch more than I can easily handle safely with this knife. Of course, a differenct lock system would work with the longer knife. Been driving me nuts; wondering whether I should keep it. I am surprised so many popular folders have large blades. It is rare that I have need for a blade larger than three inches.

I would agree with 1 and 2 from personal experience, and add that IMELDA/IMO size is a non-issue. I have no personal experience with accidents and alcohol, but you're probably right about that as well.

That pretty much covers it for me, although I'd rearrange the order to 2, 3, 1. I play with them more than I actually use them. The last couple times I cut myself were actually with one of the smallest knives I own, the Case Peanut. That little bugger bites hard, and when it does, that tiny little pen blade cuts big.

Trainers do have a recreational, as opposed to formal training, use and justification. ;)

Lol, I think the main reason is stupidity :P I cut the tip of my finger off trying to cut a hair I was holding.
