I stumbled onto this finish by accident while finishing an axe handle. Its kinda antique looking. The wood is just a plain white hickory handle I picked up at the local hardware store. I thought everyone here might appreciate a look after seeing Brian's nice S&N.

Soooo... What is the finish?! It looks awesome.

Sorry for the tease. Its a wax finish. I was rubbing it on then using a bic to melt it in and open up the wood. I accidentally let the wax get sooty and, well, it turned into that black inky wax that filled in the pores. After burnishing the handle this was the final result. I guess you could just use shoe wax or dark wood filler too.

You can get the same effect by staining a piece dark, sanding the top layer off (the deeper grain will hold the color) then re staining with a lighter color.

I've done it to a few hammer handles when we were bored at work. Turns out great.

Here is my Wetterlings with lightly torched, then linseed oil finished handle.

That is cool. I like the look. How do you like the feel of it? The reason I ask is the "slick varnished" finish is one of my pet peeves. Which is one of the reasons I sanded mine off.

It feels like smooth wood, not varnish (plasticy?) if that's what you mean.
