When people have ordered in the past, does the product usually come as advertised on the site? Mostly in regards to handles, it seems like every picture I've seen is different in some way. I've noticed that, depending on the picture, black micarta looks black, grey, or sometimes a bit green. On http://badmojo.tv, scales labeled as "green linen micarta" under FSH look nothing like the ones listed as handle options on the busse combat site. This is all totally fine: I really like the variation; but, I guess I just want to know how close the options on the site usually compare to the actual item.

I guess this is all coming out right now because I am considering another FBM and I want the set to look as handsome as possible when they finally get here.(:jerkit: )

...Although, an ugly combo would make the "which one will be my user"-decision quite a bit easier.

Also, if anyone would like to post pics of black/green g10 or black/tan g10, I will dance at your wedding.

sometimes i get the feeling that i'm looking through the bottom of a johnny walker blue bottle when i see jerry's pic's....

maybe we shoud all chip in and get him a new camera!  ;)

Micarta is not a homogenous product really. A fabric or matrix such as canvas isn't going to be laid perfectly flat and is going to provide slightly different results depending on how many layers or "strata" are carved into by the machinery. I am sure there are slight variations in batches of micarta as well. Referencing Garth's (Blue Label) post on the confusion between Tiger Stripe and Tiger Hide micarta slabs on the LE's will shed some light on this.

That said, I have found that I get what I expected by looking at the site and referecing different pictures of other knifes with similar handles or coatings. Sometimes pics are taken of oiled handles vs. newly finished or "pristine" slabs. Also...the recent MOASH's went out with some type of sealer on the Tiger Hide that really made the color in the micarta pop, bringing out more yellow/orange in them and I suspect the sheen on the slabs of the FBMLE pic may suggest that they will receive the same treatment.

Just my 2 cents :o

There are also a lot of handle options that have never been available before too. The green linen appears to be something totally new from past offerings and the G-10 is new too. Will be hard to get comparable pics for those.

You usually ARE looking through the bottom of a JWB !!! LOL

Like I am usually looking through the bottom of a Sour Mash bottle! LOL

Still, not bad.

The brown beer bottles REALLY distort the color though.

With Micarta it's all a surprise and all good.

speaking of matrix, the green linen looks the same to me at least on the wardens, i love the green linen and have several or all the blades it was offered in. the you can take in to account whether the coating if any (not usually) is cbl or jwb. now on some occasions i've even seen what looks like cheesecake on the scales.
keep in mind that all the blade contain 47.8% hand work making them like a half n half production/custom knife.
and keeping in mind that the record keeping sucks, the odds are you will receive a blade destined for the center of the earth, the moon, or some dicks desk in chicago.

now let me see, i think, well, what in the heck is in this box???

Check out Jerry's pics of the Mojo variants for the overganzaaa for pics of the black/green and black/tan g10 scales here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=423822

Too late for the dance though. ;)

Thanks for the replies. Y'see this is exactly what I'm talking about. Anyone who sees similarities between the overganzaaa pics and those on the busse combat site needs to give the Passport scotch a rest

Micarta varies from batch to batch, and different finishing methods, textures, lighting, and other substances (water, oil, coating, whatever) can make even the same knife appear different. Plus, any of the patterned micartas (tiger stripe, snakeskin) will have a variable pattern.

The biggest issue seems to be with green and black micarta. In my experience, black isn't jet black. I've heard descriptions from greenish to very dark grayish.

In general, pictures of a particular model seem to agree pretty well with what I've gotten. Don't look at an old model (straight handle steelheart, for example) with very green handles and expect to get something similar on a new model. New micarta from the shop, especially canvas, seems to have more light tones in it than what you would expect. This may be from the rougher fabrics (canvas vs. linen vs. paper) or the aggressive textures. The light tones darken when the handle is wet, or if you use it a bit. I don't have any experience with Busse G10 handles.

true but the green linen shouldn't be confused with the greenish black canvas micarta. the greenish black canvas micarta will turn grayblack with use and if you wash it up with dish soap and hot water will look very mossy green, but it is not green micarta.

the green linen appears to be dark green with white layers and of course is a smoother texture.

FYI, in my experience with the Snakeskin, it has had quite a bit of an OD green, mint green and rusty brown. Great camo scheme.
