I use a DMT aligner kit to sharpen my small folding knives, but now I think it's time my bigger fixed blades need to be sharpened.I've heard good reviews about this sharpener.Right now it's between this and the Lansky deluxe crock stick turnbox. Is this a viable option?

I used to have an Accusharp, it scrapes metal from the edge, I'm not sure that is what you want. I also have the Lansky turn box with the gray and white rods. It is good if your knife has an already established edge and you just want to touch it up. If the knife is very dull it isn't that great. Takes way too long.

Find a 1 x 42" belt sander from a garage sale like I did ($20) and never look back:p. The time you spend sharpening anything will decrease dramatically, and the sharpness will increase dramatically with the power strop. You will appreciate the time savings with the machetes and large knives.

I ordered a 8"x2" Norton 2-sided India Stone (Medium India one side; Fine India the other side) and a 6"x2" DMT Dia-Sharp 2-sided Diamond Stone (Fine one side; Extra Fine the other side) from Sharpening Supplies yesterday. Those two stones should be all you'll ever need to sharpen any knife you have. That said, the DMT Aligner you have should be able to sharpen some pretty big knives -- to at least a 7" blade anyway.

Are you talking about the pull-through Accusharp? Not my cup of tea but it does work in a pinch. I've heard that the pull-through sharpeners can actually pull metal from a blade thus causing a chip.

Those Accusharp sharpeners will tear your edge up. I have had to repair several knives for friends that used them. Get the Lansky turn box, but you will need a stone if you ever damage your edge. I use the Lansky turn box crock sticks for almost all of my sharpening and they work very well. They give a nice shaving edge very quickly and easily. But, if you need to fix or reprofile an edge, forget it. Thats where I use my DMT DiaSharp Course/Fine diamond stone.
