I have a couple of larger blades that i want to darken with my ferric. Any tips on how to get an even etch without dipping them as they're too big for any container?

Tried painting the stuff on but gives inconsistent cover

thanks

I made my FC container out of 4" PVC pipe. I found 2' precut lengths at the home store. With a few caps, you can cut them down to any length you need. Mine is around 15" deep. Holds about 1/2 gallon of liquid. I hope that helps.

I made my container out of clear 2 1/2” pvc.

Any brushing, blotting, spraying, will be uneven. Hell its tough enough to get a consistent etch with everything in you favor from the start. Don’t fight it, get a container correct for your application.

Yea ones a cleaver so the pipe size would have to be massive, and the amount of fluid i would need would be mad

I think the key for wiping on the ferric chloride is almost rubbing it in, I kept scrubbing the piece with fresh acid quickly and on both sides. I’ve seen Jason Knight apply gun blue to darken blades with a spray bottle and if I’m remembering correctly he said you just have to apply it quickly and it comes out really even.
