Acid Etch

Good Sunday morning everyone. There's a good chance I am about to ruin my day, and would appreciate your comments!

Having etched the blade (HD chain) and bolsters (Stainless damascus) , have now pinned (nickel silver) mother of pearl (mop) handles. Now I want to touch up the fit between bolster and mop slabs - don't like the transition. But this will mean messing up the etched bolsters.

Question: if I put back into muriatic acid - 3/4 minutes, will the acid affect either the mop or the epoxy?

IIRC mother of pearl is calcium carbonate which will be attacked by acids.Perhaps the best you could do is tape off everything but the bolsters and apply etchant with a cotton swab.

MOP will be destroyed by any acid.Even vapors leaking up under tape might do it harm.Mask off the MOP with wax and you might be able to do what you want.
Remember why I suggested using torx screws for assembly/DISASSEMBLY.Now you know why.

As you say, now I know why. I'll try that next time - it seemed to me that torx screws might look a bit large on mop - I have used on antler, and they seem to blend right in.

Thanks for the tips.

Mike

You can get them in gold plated tops. The plated ones look wonderful in MOP.They come so small that the real problem is taping the tang .Check K&G , Koval,or any of the others. 1-72 and 0-80 are good for MOP.I like the button heads, they look like rivets.

Hi Mike

Jeff carries folder pivots in 1/8 and the screws are nice and small. no Taping, easy assemble and disassemble. I have used them lots. all you have to do is drill a hole that matches the size of the pivot.(1/8,5/32,1/4).
