Acid Wash A Writing Pen?

So I have a writing pen that is a little beat up, a decade old, gold colored (not my style) and not particularly expensive to begin with. A corporate gift for getting through a tough project. Anyway, rather than have it sit there largely unused, I figured, why not try my hand at acid washing with some muriatic acid I have sitting around.

I've never done this before, but read some about it, and although I don't have an ideal metal to work with or fluoric acid to work with, I figure, what the hell, might as well give it a shot. Is this thing going to turn out even uglier than it is now, any advice or suggestions? I was thinking of just soaking it as is and see how it turns out, but I'll attempt any design suggestions too.

Before and after pics to come once I'm back on my computer. Tappa hinders a victim picture at the moment.

Also, didn't think this really warranted being posted in the knifemakers forum, but if it should feel free to move it.
