Ack..does Buck sell new sheaths or how to get cigarette smoke out of an old one

I recently bought a nice old Buck Frontiersman. When I unpacked it, the beautiful brown leather sheath reeked of cigarette smoke, and I can't get that nasty smell out. Does buck sell sheaths? How can I get the smell out, if it is even possible. I've left it outside, bagged it up with dryer sheets, but it still smells awful.

On a side note, I wish sellers would say whether or not the knife has been in a smoke free environment.

Wow, that's quite some process. If it was my sheath I'd buy some saddle soap and a tooth brush and scrub clean the outside and inside of the sheath, rinse the sheath off and pat dry. Then let it sit until fully dry and rub in some leather conditioning oil.

Charcoal and white vinegar (not mixed) will get the smoke smell out of a house but cigarettes have tar and oil in the smoke. Those crazy guys on Car Talk have used Fabreez to get this stench out of cars. But, I think the Saddle Soap idea is a good one, too. You might clean it with Mink Oil afterwards. Since the inside of the sheath is rough, maybe, I wonder if Suede Cleaner would do the job, there, and the Saddle Soap on the outside?

I wonder if it would help to put the sheath in a ziplock baggie or Tupperware with a bunch of baking soda? That might absorb some of the odor. A good coat of shoe polish might help to seal in the odor.

I'd give saddle soap and tooth brush a shot with a rigorous wipe down when done.

Its only cigarette smoke, leave it out where it can be exposed to air and it will fade with time.

Maybe I'll stop by a saddlery and get some saddle soap. That's a good idea. I love the smell of the Buck sheaths, and while I know this will never smell good, I would be happy if it didn't smell bad.

Tandy Leather carries saddle soap if there is one near you. They might have suggestions as well.
