Why me? o_O I don't know but out of the blue, some months back, it was decided by Gary W. Graley Gary W. Graley and Matthew Gregory Matthew Gregory that I was to be the recipient of this David Boye blade with Matt's exquisite handle detail work.

Myrtle handle on a 3" blade.

Very rarely has any knife that I "brought home" attracted any attention from my wife but this one got - "WOW - I like that, this one can stay in the kitchen right? Well, of course it has stayed in the kitchen. It's a perfect paring knife, so useful for so many tasks.

Yes, I will build a proper holder for it. The cork was intended as a place holder. Our magnet knife rack (rare earth magnets imbedded into the back of a maple board) has no attraction for this lovely little Cobalt blade Bird & Trout.

In the meantime it has been accompanied on the window sill by other little sculptures.

Just wanted to say to Gary and Matt - we love it! Thanks very much. It is an honor and a treat to have it in our home.

Nice Ray, it was a twisted path that took this knife from the desert of Arizona to a small home near Buffalo down to an even smaller home near Corning NY and finally resting in the upper north east.

Started with a request I made on an instgram thread that Matt started and I withdrew it but, he remembered it and contacted me about making a sheath for a special knife for him. I ended up making that folder sheath and in return got the larger of the two David Boye blades that he hafted and finished the blades on. Which I also made a 'rare' fixed blade sheath for, but found it to be not something that I would likely press into service very often.

So as fortune would have it, I was able to make a trip to visit Matt, got to see his shop and the lovely woods he lives in, a slice of paradise if ever there was one. During the visit we talked and I swapped the larger knife for that smaller one, hoping it would work into something I would use for wood carving. So he figured out someone to get the larger knife, now nicely sheathed ;)

But as time went on, that one also did not prove to be the right size for my needs and I reached out to Matt and between the two of us, your name popped up and off she went and we both were glad that you liked and are enjoying it.

Hand stitching was much fun...one of the reasons I stick to only making folder sheaths :)

Thanks Ray,

That was an incredibly fun project. Both of those blade ‘blanks’ were acquired directly from David Boye, when I met him at Blade Show a couple years back. He was a tremendous influence on me, with his book being one of the iconic tomes for the bulk of my generation’s inspiration. An engaging personality, extremely well-spoken and eager to share. Although the paths for these unique blades may have been wandering, I think they followed the paths they were INTENDED to take.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying that!

David Boye is now 80 and is still working in Dolan Springs AZ. His shop burned down a number of years ago and he lost a good number of knives he had saved for himself. Tragic Loss. I am sending a nice old Boye knife out to Dave and Debbie just to show my appreciation for all that he has done for us in the knife world. I would like to suggest to All, if you are able, to send a nice old Boye knife back to them to show them our Love and Appreciation for all they have done. Their Lives have been quite an accomplishment. A Knife for Dave. Let’s show them some Love.

I am new to Bladeforums. Please help me spread the Word about A Knife for Dave. I am sending a New Bird and trout that must be 30 years old. Wouldn’t it be nice for Dave and Debbie to open up little surprises going forward. Thank You so very much.
