hey all,

I just checked my ebay account today and discovered I had one a few axe heads that I bidded on some time ago. It surely was a surprise! Are these any good?

First is this Verona hatchet head with "US 93" marked on the side

Second I picked up this collins hatchet head

I didn't expect to win these and placed the bid some time ago! I may end up reselling them since I bought a large knife in place of my hatchet needs. But, perhaps they are worth holding on to.

Collins and Woodings-Verona both made well regarded axes and hatchets. I think you've got 2 winners there, likely good steel in both of them.

Thanks so much! Looks like I may have a nice project here. I guess all I have to do is sand them down to kick off the rust, file down the edge, and rehandle them. Think I can handle that. :)

Sanding will do, but most of us here use wire wheels for light rust and a vinegar bath for heavier rust. Neither of yours has heavy rust. The Collins' rust is light enough that some WD-40 and steel wool might do the job. And filing is a good start but you'll want a stone to put a nice edge on those hatchets.

Congrats on winning a couple nice pieces.

Great! That doesn't sound bad at all. I'll probably sell one of them since I don't need two. Thanks for the help.

They both seem to be good users. Take a little action on them; remove the rust and sharpen the blades, but without any electric machines. (I´m sure you know that...)

Ah... and place some handles on them ;) Just joking! Great shots you made on the bay. The shapes of both seem to be pretty traditional. What about the weight, how heavy are they?

Kind regards
Andi

Sorry, was just reading an was wondering because I have one with US 93 on it. Thanks for the info.

Not too big of a deal, just keep it in mind.
I don't own a WV axe, but I do own my grandpa's 4lb drilling hammer which is a US 94 and it wasn't until I saw an enquiry here about an axe that I found out who made it because for some reason there was no reason to be found.
