Epoxy breaks down over time?
What are the characteristics of Acraglass?

Can T.J. or anyone else explain this more?

Thanks.
Carl

I haven't seen an epoxy failure first hand, but as I understand it, standard 15 min or 24 hour epoxy will become brittle after a couple of years exposure to air/light/temp changes.

Acraglass is a 4 to 1 ratio epoxy used to bed rifle actions to stocks. It (supposedly) has none of the fillers used to bring other epoxy's up to a 1 to 1 ratio, and is specifically designed to last for many years.

I use a 10cc and a 3cc syringe to mix the 4 to 1 ratio. 2.5cc's is just about enough for 1 set of slabs.

Thanks, James. Once again I'm reminded that not all epoxys are equal. There's a huge variation in them. I started out with 5 minute epoxy (for convenience), then switched to 24 hour epoxy because I was told it is much stronger. I was planning to switch to golf club head epoxy (strongest I've heard about), but maybe I'll take a look at this other stuff too.

I use Acraglass for all my gluing needs. It does not get brittle over time, like epoxies, and it was formulated to bond wodd, composites to metal. It has a terrific shelf life, long working time, and can be colored.

Hello,

Use the stuff Exclusively myself,,,,but the Mix Ratio as stated on the container is One part Resin to one part hardener or a 1:1 ratio. a 4:1 Ratio Depending on what part is the more. can cause insufficient bond strength.

I have heard of many switching from epoxy to other goo because of handles popping off. The knifemaker teaching me the ropes (Les Allen) has heard of this happening and he uses Acraglas and won't switch back now!

I guess that there are different types of acraglass then. I use the kit from sheffields (i think) it is sold as enough to do 2 guns. The it is definately a 4 to 1 ratio as there is only 1/4 as much hardener as resin (or vise versa). For the price and the number of blades you can do with it, it's about the same price as devcon.

Allen,

I think you're using Acra-weld. That's a 2 part that's mixed 1 to 1. I use that also, and it works fantastic! i believe it is classified as an epoxy, but it still works great.

Hello,

The Brand i am using is Brownells
ACRA-GLASS GEL i think its a little thicker than the Normal stuff,,,,i buy it in the big Tubs from Brownells directly. your right
the Other material might be a 4:1 mix ratio

Take care,
Allen Blade

i use T88...from what i understand it is what they use on golf clubs...but primarily it is a wood workers epoxy....1:1...perfect viscosity for handles....the right color too (nearly clear)....i have used this since the beginning as i used it in woodworking before i started making knives....two of the best woodworkers i know use it...i think the brownells stuff is a little too thick.

I have used the following from Brownell's
MICRO-BED

Stock No. Product Price
594-600-000 Micro-Bed Kit $11.25

It is not as thick as Acra-glass. I have also just bought some shaft epoxy from Golfsmith. I have heard that it is the cat's meow but I haven't used it yet.

I suppose that most folks use Devcon 2-Ton epoxy. Remember, the 5 minute stuff is not waterproof!
