Hi, I have been looking at a GEC with acrylic handle and was wondering how well they hold up compared to bone. I have no experience with acrylic so I was wondering do they scratch easily, or chip and crack easily if dropped. Thanks

I find them to be pretty tough. They shouldn't crack like bone might if dropped, but they can get light surface scratches which are pretty easy to smooth out with a buffing.

This. It also depends on what else is in your pocket. If you're using a slip or the knife isn't in there with anything hard then you'll hardly notice a difference.

I'd love to see some well used acrylic, but most people on this subforum seem to shy away from synthetic handle materials. (including me, for the most part)
I have seen some old scratched up celluloid that still looks great, and I've been wondering if acrylic ages the same way.

That Green Bullet End always gets my vote! They need to offer it again.

I find it tough enough, it won't shrink or warp in changing humidity, no gassing the rest of the knife collection to death, probably stands dropping better than bone- don't try this at home:D I loathe carrying my knife with coins or change :barf: (It's a POCKET knife not a bin knife!) so can't comment on that aspect. All I know is, I'm very glad GEC fields this option. N.B. must get some Dead Skunk.....

Thanks, Will

Hi Will
"N.B. must get some Dead Skunk"..... Yessssss :D "They need to offer it again." Noooooo :D:D
I just grabbed a 62 in Spring Tulip, another very pretty red. My first love in slip joints were Celluloids
but the chance of gassing was too much stress :D Love the acryics and NO ONE is doing better scale patterns than GEC.
Every handle is different.

Best regards

Robin

Right you are Robin!

The 09 had a very good range of acrylics but the knife was too tiny for my taste.

Thanks, Will

I have only been carrying this #92 for five days and i have to say that my initial worries are gone, of course some care must be taken, for instance i carry mine in my left front pocket with my handkerchief so it is away from coin strike, should i get a bad head cold i may have to re think that. I bought this Lava Acrylic because i liked the look of it, i have a Goldenrod cover version on its way and i thought the Lava would do until the proper knife got here, now i have two proper knives.
So my advice is buy an acrylic and enjoy it.

I love this thread.

Robin, that pemberton is awesome in the tomato scales, I recently got one in cherry soda and it's lovely.

Vendors picture.

Does anyone have any root beer acrylic, I loved that one from GEC?

I'm surprised we haven't had more people talking about or showing their regularly used acrylics. I see quite a few acrylics on here, are people just not carrying them?

My first GEC was acrylic. A 66 Mink Skinner in sea glass. I don't carry it much anymore, but I am quite fond of it. I just throw it in my pocket with change or whatever is in there. Seems to hold up well.

This is my fishing knife and is regularly carried unprotected in my pocket beside my keys and change.

I dont think the scales look much worse for the wear. If you catch the light right you can see scratches in the acrylic but I normally do not notice them.
