What do you think? Is an acrylic watch face OK? I have about decided on an O&W sub diver but believe they use acrylic lenses. These scratch very easily don't they?

Dennis,
Yes, the acrylic crystals do scratch very easily. There are, however, a number of specialized polishing compounds which can help keep the damage under control.

If the other features of the O&W watch really appeal to you, one thing you might consider is having the stock crystal replaced with an aftermarket sapphire crystal. It's my understanding that the price on these has come down drastically of late. I'd recommend contacting a first-rate watchmaker like Eric Martin to see if such a retrofit might be possible. Info on Eric can be found at:

Not all of them Dennis. My watch, the Cougar, has a sapphire crystal.

The Cougar is the latest creation of O&W. It´s great. Never take it off! The pic displays a released crown allowing adjustements of time and date.

Acrylic scratches more easily than mineral glass, but scratches can be polished out easily. Once you scratch a mineral glass crystal (it does happen), it pretty much stays scratched.

I prefer mineral, but if I like the watch itself, I'm not going to pass it up just because of the plastic crystal. Remember, acrylic scratches "easily" as compared to mineral glass--it is a very tough plastic, and can take reasonable wear.
