Action on my Umnumzaan, any ideas/pointers?

Hey blade forums. I've got two problems with my relatively new umnum. Looking for some input. The first, is that I can't get the action back to how I want it. The second, is that the clip rattles. Details -->

I've had my umnumzaan about a month now. I bought it second hand here on BF and it was "like new." There was still some of the CR' fluorinated grease in the pivot when I first got it. The knife was very smooth, but the action was easy.

After a couple weeks of carry and use, the knife got gunked up. I took it apart. The breakdown was easy. I used 10w nano oil to lubricate the pivot (it's my best lubricant I have) and put it all back together. It's the new umnumzaan with the small pivot.

The breakdown was very simple. There are the two perforated bronze washers, and a pivot screw on each side. One of them has threads, the other is a tube. Very simple. I build it all back up the way I broke it down. No problems.

Now that it's back together, it's just not that easy action I was expecting. It's smooth, but not easy. I understand that the nano oil is thinner than the CRK grease. Do you guys think that's the problem?

I called CRK telephone service number. They say basically that I over tightened the pivot and the nano oil should not be the problem. I tried the pivot at varying tightnesses.. I just can't seem to get it to that "perfect" combination.

The knife is so simple and it doesn't have too many parts. Was wondering if anyone has experience and help clarify this issue for me. Possibilities in my head so far are:

1) Lubricant too thin. Maybe heavier weight or the specified CRK grease is whats needed to fix it.

2) Not tightening it down just right.. I'm not 100% on this but I've tried a lot of different positions of the pivot. Some slight blade play when its loose, and even almost as tight as it will go. The action is mostly the same in all different tightnesses.

3) Maybe flipping the washers or hardware around?

The second issue is that the clip rattles. It's been like this since I got it. There is a slight mark in the titanium of the clip at a bend point, as if it got bent or hooked on something. If the knife is out and in the locked position, it clicks against the lockbar quite often. Nothing a huge deal, but somewhat annoying. If I press the clip toward the lockbar, it will fix it for a little while, but the rattle comes back every time. The rep said she things the clip screw is stripped and thats whats causing the rattle. I examined it and found one of the threads of the clip screw is indeed stripped. Thoughts, experiences on this? Do I need a new clip screw? I new clip completely? Is it supposed to rattle?

Thanks in advance for your input!

To fix the clip tension the easiest way is to turn the clip 180 and bend it slightly over the butt of the handle untill you find the tension you want. If the screw is tripped they will send you a new one and you can just remmeber that trick for the future. :p

The action on a knife like Umnumzaan (and 25) is something you will need to play with to get right. The standard Sebenzas have a bushing system so you just tighten the screws down and you're good to go. The Umnumzaan will need a bit of fine tuning from you after you rebuild the knife. The pivot has quite a long thread so the sweet spot is a case of "fine" tuning. I personally set the action slightly stuffer than I want it to be and it settles in to where I want it with a short term of use. The lube you use will make essentially no differnce. :)

Awesome! Thank you very much for your reply. I will continue to toy with it and see if i can find the sweet spot!

I suppose it's a bit like changing the break pads on your car, the break peddle always feels different at first but then it seats in and you get used to it. The knife is always going to feel a little different after you service it, it just takes a little while to settle in or for you to get used to the different feel. This is one reason people like the bushing system on the standard Sebenzas, those knives do tend to just go right back to where they were. :)

Yeah that makes total sense. Any other tips/ suggestions for finding that perfect sweet spot? I mean, I mainly have just been adjusting the pivot tightness. Is there any other thing I can be doing? ie, positioning/ assembly techniques/ etc?

On my Umnumzaan, I go until the pivot stops with very light pressure on the hex wrench..then back off just enough..to break it free..maybe 2 degrees. It's important that when I say the pivot stops..I am not putting ANY pressure on the wrench other than the motion to turn it with one finger.

That's similar to what I do, but it just won't work out. Not sure. I'll have to keep experimenting I guess!

Just a thought - are you adjusting the pivot with the knife folded, or with the blade out and locked?
