Just picked up a Heavy Duty. Here it is with the Active. The Active is .152 and the Heavy .21. I like the HD, it is a bit fat but not so fat that it wouldn't cut well.

Of course now Skunk will post a wheelbarrow full of these things.

I have come to think of knives the same way I do urban v. suburban v. rural living. I either want a big city with everything available or I want to be out in the middle of nowhere where I can walk out the door and start firing a .357 and not take any lip from neighbors.

So with knives about the biggest knife I want to pack around is a Badger and if I don't have to worry about carrying it then a Steal Heart or Battle Mistress would be my pick. Of course others opinions will be different but I have seemed to settle here.

Sweet Duties you have there Tony!

Just curious... what do you think of the Duties compared to the GWs?

For lack of better wordz...

...I'd post a pic of mine, with the larger choil, but it has recently come to my attention that the USPS has currently 'DELIVERED' it to some unknown addy in my ZIP CODE...NOT MINE. Bummer, huh? I will BE kicking AZZ tomorrow.

...But, Back to you & yours...
  !!!!!!!!!!! :D

much of my collection had been smaller stuff, gw's, mrs, smaller hunters, folders. im finding i also really like the larger ones, and i am just now picking some up.

its nice to have a balance.:D

Yes, I think I hear the Active Duty drawer opening now. :D I think that drawer has a Busse auto hidden away in a black box.

Thanks,

This isn't going to be much help to you but after thinking about your question I can't say that I like either one more than the other. I have a full set of Wardens and if I had a full set of duties I'd still try and get every Warden that came out. I like them both that much.

But I'll add that living in a city, I can take a GW more places than the AD it just looks more friendly. As an all purpose knife I like the AD or HD better, I think that blade shape is more useful in general. So if I was going backpacking I'd take the AD first but if I was fishing for big fish (Salmon/Tuna) then the GW would be better for cleaning the fish. If I was fishing for Calif Trout both are too big for an 8 -12 inch fish. And I never keep a trout anyway unless I had damaged the fish with the hook or ran out of food.

I think I'll use the HD a lot when I go help friends work on their vineyards and stuff like that. I wouldn't worry about prying a fair amount with that one. But then if I was doing that kind of work there would be no reason not to have a big knife around as carrying it 35 miles over the course of a few days isn't an issue.

Like I said I can't be of much help here other than to say that if you like the smaller knives you "need" to own a duty, they are cool knives but they would not make me sell off any Wardens.

I hope to also have a LMS on the way if things work out. I'll have to do some research and see how far I am from having all the "production" knives between the size of a Warden and a Badger at that point. There are things like that drop pt hunter Ducci posted, or bad apples, but I can't see anyone selling those:grumpy:.

Soon I'm having a bunch of friends over for a prime rib dinner for the holidays. I think I'm going to set the table with wardens & duties as steak knives:thumbup:.

I think the wardens and duties are a great size for hiking/EDC etc. I wish there was a tweener between these two and the BA. The AD is nicer as a slicer, the slightly thinner stock makes a different feel from the HD. I found my user HD grind to be way too thick for my purposes and thinned it out a little. It cuts better and I still would feel plenty confident to pry a bit with it if I had to. Grind off the rear talon hole and you have a warden grip so I find both to be pretty comfortable. I would like an extra inch and a half with the larger choil and the warden grip and I would be in heaven.

Nice score !

I like the HD better than the AD. It just seems more substantial. I wouldn't hesitate to pry with the HD, for some reason  I think I could get enough leverage on the AD to tweak it, probably not. Since the GW showed up I haven't edc'd the HD :(

I got curios about the real size difference between the GW and the HD

Just overfeed the HD for a little belly, grind off the pommel hole and give it a nose jog and the HD is a GW.

 GREAT comparison shots JJPS!!! Thanks!

Just more confirmation that I'm fine with my smog. :D

thanks for the pics, nice comparison. i think the warden is awesome for edc as it was designed for. i also agree that if you were to go hunting you should have a lil longer blade, like a duty model or badger.

it's all in how you feel that day i guess. i once went hunting with this newbie and he pulled out a blade about the size of a battle mistress to clean his deer. i ended up doing most of his cleaning with a t180 old timer, a very small folder with about a 2.5" blade.

both blades worked but neither was very suited for the job.

here's a couple more comparison pics, the larger old timer (not the one referenced above) was given to me by my father when i was about 11 yrs old. it didn't lock open cleaned many deer and elk, and closed on my fingers many a time.

Thanks Skunk,

You always have such great stuff!

I'm not sure, in the second photo are the top two knives a Streets and Badger respectively?

Thanks,
Tony G

Thanks,

I would have never thought they were that close and I have had them both in my hands at the same time many times in the past hour or so.

Good job pointing that out. It is always a shocker to see how much difference very small differences make.
