Active Duty vs. 8" PBF - Pricing Confusion

Folks,

I'm confused, and a Busse neophyte. Someone just sold a new Active Duty (posting below) for $230 in the sale forum. A new 8" PBF, admittedly sans sheath and wrapping, sells for around $20 more. Yet, the 8" PBF is a much bigger knife.

Why do these two knives sell for nearly the same price, despite the big size difference? Does the lack of a sheath and wrapping explain the pricing similarity?

Thanks Alan

P.S. Think I'm legit to post here now, as I own 4 Busse's with another 2 on the way.

Wouldn't that make the 8" PBF's more valuable? Expected them to fetch a higher price vs. the Active Duty. FWIW, couldn't find a used, in good shape, 8" PBF. Folks only wanted to sell new ones, both wrapped and unwrapped.

Still confused. Alan

The naked PBF's were found during renovation and after the wrapping machine was long gone and were priced much lower than the wrapped versions. Yes, they are bigger, but it was a one time deal with good prices. There were also 6" and 4" versions.

Rob,

You're saying that the unwrapped 8" PBF's were, in effect, a closeout, and thus were priced lower. Sellers are willing to sell them for a price related their acquisition costs, resulting in anomalously low prices compared to other Busse knives. Correct?

Thanks Alan

The value of a Busse is much more complex than the actual size of the knife. It is all about supply and demand. Mean Streets go for an average of about $375, and they are much smaller than an 8" PBF. The actual size of a discontinued Busse has nothing to do with the current market price.

Alan,

Good question! Another reason the AD costs nearly the same as the much larger PBF is the extra work spent finishing the AD blade to give it the satin finish. All of the coated Busse blades have a rougher finish under the coating.

one more reason to add is the usability for edc. the pbf's are awesome, but the ad is thin edged, and meant for every day cutting, making them desireable for usage. while the specialty busse's are awesome, if its not a variant, it seems like the users and abusers tend to stay more constant in their price then the limited runs.

Think of it like art... it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it!

Personally I think the PBFs are undervalued... as they are one of the nicest fighting knives ever made IMHO.:D

Mtnclimber69 + Seth,

Gets back to supply and demand. There may be a bigger demand for AD's than for 8" PBF's, because they are generally more suitable as an EDC. 8" blades are not suitable as an EDC for most of us. Plus, and here's the art part, the finish, scales and sheath give it eye appeal. Saw an 8" PBF with orange cord wrap, that definitely had eye appeal, and also a higher price than an unwrapped one.

Speaking of EDC and eye appeal, who makes good kydex sheaths for 8" and 6" PBF's?

Thanks for the info and ideas. Alan

Hi Alan... not sure if any makers of kydex actually have a pbf themselves, so you may have to send one in... if you do let us know as there are a few people who may piggyback on getting some done. If you are looking to buy one or the other of the knives you mention let us know that too!

Be happy to let you know about any sheathmakers I uncover. Have a knifemaker in mind, but am unsure if he makes sheaths for knives, that he did not make.

Thanks for the offer to hook up some AD's and PBF's.

Are there handle wrapping instructions readily available? If so, where? Searched this forum, and found some wrapping threads.

Thanks Alan

Alan... I do know that if you want leather Dwayne (leatherman) has the ability to make one for your pbfs without the knife.
