AD sheath failure

Got a nasty little surprise last night - my brand spankin' new AD sliced through the threads on its sheath (the leather pouch that came with the knife) and poked its tip out as if to say "peek-a-boo!" Fortunately, nobody was in its way when it occurred.

Anybody else had this happen? I'll admit my sheath gets wrung around quite a bit on my belt, but I never thought the blade would come into contact with the threads. Should I be overly concerned or is this just a limitation of this type of sheath?

My AD leather sheath has a poped thread in the front also.:(

Hi Guys,
I've got one of those sheaths as well, the welt(that piece of leather that is sandwiched between) is a little soft and thin to keep the knife from getting to the threads. On pouch sheaths in particular its very important for the welt to be nice and thick and deep, at least a 1/2".

I am sure one of the "leather benders" here could either do a repair, or can hook you up with some better leather wrappings for those AD's.

And jrozes, I owe you an e-mail! Sorry its been a bit busy around here lately:D Your new leather is gonna be NICE! you've got some great ideas buddy!

One word solution: Kydex

Big surprise coming from me right?

Mtmike and Leatherman are also super solutions to this dilemma.

It's important to remember that we buy our knives from folks who specialize in making the best knife they can.

Sheaths are just as much a specialty, but are not often recognized as such.

Glad there was no "leakage" associated with this incedent!

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!

Have I got a new respect for you leathersmiths!

I spent 2 hours repairing my AD sheath yesterday and now my hands are feelin it.

While on this project I was burned, stabbed, sliced and my finger got smashed.

First I cut out a strip of leather the size I needed and punched holes with an awl (nail).

Then I tried to sew it with a big ol carpet needle. Man, the first stitch I pushed a little too hard and put the rear of the needle right through my finger!

The thread I used was one of the strands from 550 Paracord. Worked perfect. I wish I had a pic.

I broke 2 carpet gauge needles, which made me re-evaluate my mini survival kit inventory.

I finished off the trim with a razor blade and added a small strip of leather on the inside to prevent future punctures.

It looks great. I wish I had a digi so you all could believe me :D

Anyway. Just wanted to say HATS OFF to you leathersmiths. I have a new found respect!

Hi Nic, "walked a mile in my moccasins" eh?:D Very cool! I like seeing people do something like this. Its a pride in ownership knowing you were able to fix it huh? :D

One secret for the next project, and something to carry in that bag, is a ball of beeswax. Just rub the needle and thread into the wax and it will make the needle and thread pass through the leather much easier. Note: Only beeswax, candle wax is too hard and brittle.

It is amazing the wide range of injuries one can suffer in such a simple craft huh? jabs, pokes, smashes, cuts, burns, and very sore fingers are a small part of it all.

To finish off that welt edge real smooth take some pretty rough grit sandpaper and sand till its smooth, its dusty work but well worth it, then wet the edge and burnish with a spoon or some other smooth hard object.

And thank you for the kind words bro, it does mean a lot.

Some of the standard Busse sheaths are from poor quality. I can´t understand why good (and expensive) knives often have cheap sheaths. Take a good Kydex sheath. In my opinion it´s the best solution for a outdoor knife.

I had the same problem with my AD...I've only had it for about 5 weeks and the sheath/pouch has started to come apart on my...I've got a Buy Brown kydex rig inbound.

Most Knife makers are great at making knives but extra not so good at making sheaths & that is wonderful. Like I told Jerry the other day you stay away from sheath making & I will stay away from knife making & everyone will be safer:D

Buy Brown Knives :barf: :D ????

ewwww!;) Oh, even worse, Leatherman knives!!!:footinmou AAAAACK!!

Now, yall plastic folks are an illegal assembly with more than one per thread.....go on about your business, nothing to see here.:p Oh and DAVE! You got me using the "leather bender" phrase now!!!:grumpy: You got some 'splainin to do!!!!!

Ok then.

My AD sheath did the same thing after a couple of weeks. A couple of threads weren't bad, but when the point came through the tip of the sheath ~1/4", well, I went with a desert camo Brown and I've been quite happy since.

Then again, I wanna toss Dwayne some business and get some good cowhide for it as well.

Women have a dozen or more pairs of shoes, and a half-dozen purses, why not a knife having a couple of sheaths? :)
