Well, we established that that skinner design was a bust, what do you guys think of this one?

BG42 mirror polished 3" blade. 7.75" OAL. Walrus Ivory dovetailed bolsters, titanium spacer that i didnt anodize yet. (it will be blue) The handle is stabilized sheep horn, Tapered Tang and file work.

I know the materials are a little exotic for a using knife but they are all stabilized so they should hold up. Shouldnt they?

What do you think?

The materials are a little exotic Michael but it is a beautifully made knife. As a matter of fact, it is stunning. I would have done two things differently though. The pins holding the bolsters appear to be uneven and two large. If I were to change anything, those two things would be it.

Overall.....just beautiful.

Thanks for the comments. Do you think these handle materials will hold up in the field? They are both stabilized. )Walrus ivory and sheep horn)

I tried to follow the angle of the bolster with the pins. It might look a little off because of the scan. I also used .090 pins. If i could find some white pins about .060" that would be perfect for walrus ivory. Anyone know where i could get some?

Beautiful work! I use ram horn quite a bit and find it has a mind of it's own and there's not alot you can do about it. It likes to "move" when it's not supposed to. Sounds like if it is stabilized that should stop any movement. I never thought of having it stabilized. That's what I love about this place, always learning. :D

Man thats NICE! Nice job.
Should hold up if mantained. I like the filework. What files did you use?

I have started using hidden pins for bolsters, especially if they are not metal, like horn. It is a little tricky at first, but works well. I think it looks better. I guess if you can match the color, it doesn't matter.

fantastic job!
I would agree about the pins, they do look a little off, but the materials are sweet.

I really like that knife! Well, you could have used hidden pins, if you don't like pins showing. I usually use hidden pins, unless visable pins are requested. Your knife should hold up just fine.

Looks beautiful,I,m sure who ever buys it will take good care of her,Pins probably look ok just didn,t come out right in the scan,What i,ve been doing on some of the natural materials for handles is attaching with screws and using a inlay to cover..

Get a set of Craftsman jewelers files from Sears. They have a lifetime warranty so when they get dull you take them back and they give you a new set. Im on my 4th set.

The larger rounds in the file work are done with a chainsaw file. the sharp points are done with the small half round file that came with the set. Grind off the teeth from the round side so it looks like a triangle instead of a half round. It works great.

I'll need to get a set of those files! I have a small nicholson set so they will work. How did you finish teh filework?

Sand paper wrapped around pin stock and alot of elbow grease. I still have alot of cleanup to do on this knife.

Wow, I know that you said youd dropped the skinner idea, but I bet that could not only skin, but field dress too. That looks like a great overall knife, with more than a bit o' class!

I still like the skinner idea, it's a great looking knife.

do you know much about all the swiss pattern files? I've been looking into them and the choices are enough to turn a guy away.
what should I get for doing some basic spine work?

Steve
