This is my first attempt at rear bolsters. It is BG42 Mirror polished blade, Stabilized Pomelle bubinga, tapered tang and the dreaded rear bolsters. The front bolster is something i have only done once before. Comments and suggestions are welcome

I'm a new guy so feel free to call me on it, but I have a couple points.

First off, really nice as usual, I love the look of your knives.
But the 2 very different shapes of the bolsters, front nice and curvy, back fairly angular seem a little mismatched. And while the accent(brass?) at the back bolster is really nice, it seems inconsistent with the straight silver at the front.

That said, a really nice piece, great lines, and fit and finish,(and the wood is just beautiful) hopefully I'll be able to match that quality in a couple years :foot:

The knives that i have seen that have a curved back as well as a curved front dont look symetrical to me so rather than try and match the front and having it not match exactly and look out of place, i went the other direction and did something totally different on the back. To my eye it is more pleasing than a curved bolster on both sides.

I had some engraving in mind for this knife and i think the copper spacer on the back is subtle enough to add to the overal apperance of the knife. When the engraving is done I think it will pull the whole thing together and the copper spacer will fit in nicely.

Thanks very much for your comments, it is nice to hear the negative as well as the positive.

Michael you do damn clean work. I don't have a problem with the curved vs straight bolsters or with the copper spacer. My thought on seeing the spacer was, "Yep, that's a bitch to fit. But he got it." I love that wood too, and your grinding and overall finish is so tight it makes me smile.

That knife just lays there and says, "Look at me!", and "Take me home!" Usually I can shrug such suggestive language off with no effort, but I do want to take that baby home. ;) Thanks for making my day!

Damn that's clean. Too clean. :grumpy: :D I could go both ways on the bolsters -- curved would look nice, but I like it the way it is too. Awesome work!

Is that picture to scale? :D

:D It is 5/7 scale:D

When i went to fit the bottom bolster I noticed I was 10 thousands off on the bolster holes so I had to remake them. Do you have any idea how small 1 thousandth is? There must be hundreds of those in an inch!

You guys are forcing me to make another one with curved bolsters on both ends. Damn you all!!!:D I have one heat treated already and I will put them on that one. Damn you all!!!

I have no problems with that knife, It's just gorgeous! I know that getting that kind of fit on those curved bolsters requires patience that eludes most of us.

I only have one comment............. "That is absolutely beautiful".........

Thank you for sharing that with us.

Friggin engineers. I had an inch once. It had a heck of a lot of them thousandths in it! :D

Now I want to see you make a folding knife with liners on the outside and scales on the inside. :D

Beautiful job Michael. Your fit and finish is astounding. I like the bolsters just the way they are. you do great work!

I was thinking about the idea with two curved bolsters, and wondered about peoples opinions on it.

Curved with the longer part up the spine or up the front? I can picture it both ways, not sure which way I like best. My wife likes the yin/yang looking idea of the longer part of the bolster going up the back.

What do you all think?

Jon

ps. Yeah, I forgot to mention before, I think the engraving could make the difference with the brass accent at the rear bolster, add "color" to balance it, duh, I hadn't thought of that.

Awsome work, I like the lines and the way the back compliments the front bolster. The copper accent looks off to me, but if your adding engraving then it'll probably be a realy nice touch. That said I find it very clean and it says "buy me, buy me BUY ME!!!"
