Adamas/Blade angles

I absolutely love my Adamas. I would like to hear from some other guys, about your preferred sharpening angles on D2 though. I usually use a Sharpmaker, and back bevel with the diamond stones, and then micro with med/fine on a 40. Is the D2 strong enough to take just a plain 30 degree, and hold up well?

I ask this, because I realize some of the higher end steels are "wasted", if you aren't getting the most out of them, by being able to use a lesser angle. Thanks for the input guys.

I've been wondering the same thing. I love the 275 but feel it could be a much better slicer with the right angle. I'll know more in about a week. I sent it off to be professionally sharpened because I don't have anything that will touch the D2 other than to keep it sharp. I figure once it has a solid base line I will be able to keep it up with my meager tools and abilities. Plus, it has a slight difference in the bevels from the factory and I'm not confident in my ability to fix that.

My 275's grind was slightly off. I straightened it pretty easily on a fine India stone. I really like the D2, I just wan tto know more about it, and how I can get the most out of it.

Benchmade does a great job with their HT, so you should be able to keep it at 30º inclusive with no issues. I plan on doing that with my wife's when it arrives.

All modern knives get hit at 30 degrees inclusive as a starting point.

As always the angle and grit depend on use.

I agree completely, on angle/grit. From what little I know, it's useless to own something like a ZDP-189, if you are gonna put a 40 degree edge on it. The higher end steel can take the abuse at a lesser angle, so why not do it, and get more performance out of the knife.

Just got mine back from Richard J and now I know how great d2 can be. I was beginning to wonder if it would ever get REALLY sharp and now it is. V-grind at ~30 degrees and dang this thing can cut. I'll let you know how well it holds up to everyday use in a week or two.

Here are a few photos taken with a potato of my beater. Yes the edge has taken some very small bits of damage but I also abuse it and cut some media that's a no-no.

Very nice! Tell us a little more about that edge.

Spent the majority of my time reprofiling on a DMT Coarse, followed up with fine, extra fine. Polishing was 1k/1.5k/2k/2.5k/3k sandpaper and green compound. After the polish it gets touched up on the extra fine stone one last time for a micro. Cuts pretty good for being such a thick chunk of d2.

I have taken to toothy edges lately. I sharpened mine on a norton fine india. It's about 30 di. It's not pretty, and polished up, but it will easily shave, and push cut newspaper with ease. I like D2 a lot, and it fits the Adamas perfectly.

Before I polished mine it sat with a dmt fine finish and cut just fine for what was needed. Sometimes I have to field dress animals and found that the dmt ef does that just a hair better than the dmt fine. Once a person finds the edge finish that's required for their needs knives work so much better. I've heard d2 doesn't like a polished edge so no plans on going past the dmt ef for the apex. Also agree with the D2 fitting the Adamas platform, my other Benchmade is the warn mini-barrage in D2.

Report: I work in a warehouse so I find myself using my pocket knife to cut pallet wrap and fiber straps regularly and the occasional cardboard. After 3 shifts my 275 sharpened to 30 inclusive is starting to have a little trouble with cleanly cutting pallet wrap and will not shave hair, however it's still very effective for my other tasks. It will still push cut a lime without deforming the skin for my after work drink. Lost that scary sharp edge but still a very strong working edge.
