Before I had the good sense to buy alcohol wipes, I used to wash my knives with soap and water. I would always attempt to keep the water from getting as far as the pivot but it happened more often than not that water would go that far up anyway.

My question now is, even though I oil the pivot and washers on the side that contact the bare d2 on the tang, could wate get in between the the washers and cause corrosion? And if so, would I notice it right away or would it have to get pretty rusted before I noticed anything?

I only ask because I don’t really want to have to take it apart and then re-reapply locktite after cleaning it out seeing as I have just reapplies locktite a couple weeks ago and not cleaned anything out.

Thanks for any advice guys

Spray it with WD-40 to remove any water or loose corrosion. You should be good to go after that.

If you're not going to disassemble your knife to properly dry or make sure there's not water trapped anywhere it's just not a good idea, especially on a steel that isn't very stainless. There are just too many ways water can get trapped and cause corrosion, in the pivot area, between scales and liners, within fixtures and screw threads. If your knife gets dirty enough that it needs a trip in a bath of soapy water then you should be taking it down. You might get away with it for a while, but one day you'll get corrosion, maybe in a place that causes issues. If you must dunk it in water and don't plan on taking it apart, make sure to use WD40 to displace that water as best you can and a hairdryer to properly heat up and dry it, a quick flick and towel dry is not enough to ensure no issues down the track.

FWIW, Benchmade makes a Benchmade Cleaner that does a wonderful job getting in the nitty gritty. Otherwise, soap and water and some hot air to properly dry it and the Adamas will do just fine.

I ended up taking the pivot down and cleaning it out with alcohol and giving the pivot and washers a good oil before putting it back together. No damage anywhere. I decided that waiting wasn’t a good idea. If it were any of my other stainless knives I don’t worry about it.

On the other plus side of this, I realized that there’s a tan coating on the area of the gang that contacts the washers and pivot pin. Most likely for dummies like me that cut an onion and then use water to clean off my almost stainless blade
