Adaptive radiation describes the rapid speciation of a single or a few species to fill many ecological niches. This is an evolutionary process driven by natural selection, successful and novel adaptation, and sometimes by mutation (heritable/genetic variation).
Okay, I know this is for plants and animals and how they have evolved due to site-specific conditions, but as a biologist this was the best way I had to put it. In my search for the perfect hunting knife [for me this is a knife for skinning, gutting, and de-boning deer and bear], I have begun to study the development of tribal blade designs. This leads to fascinating reading and you can visually see the similarities of the blades and also how different areas and tribes to meet their own specific needs have adapted them. I am interested in all parts of the world, but have been focusing more time recently on the Nordic and Scandinavian designs.
The Laplanders have the Leuku knife link
The Finnish have the Puukko knife link
The Swedish have the Mora knife link
From what I can tell from handling these great knives, I need a 4 1/2 inch handle and a 3 3/4 inch blade...What can you tell me about your favorite traditional tribal knife design?
My last design was made by Chuck Richards in Fortuna, CA. I designed the knife and had him make it to my specs. It is amazing to handle, and Chuck is a great knifemaker.
I want to do this all again, but I want to make the perfect knife for skinning, gutting, and deboning blacktailed deer and black bears with an occassional feral pig involved. I think this can be done by a knife of traditional design and wanted to see what you all had to offer on opinions?
