Does anyone have any idea of the cost for modifying a BA-E to add a finger choil after the talon hole? I guess really it would be enlarging the choil that is already there...

For that matter, how about the cost to add it to a Basic #5 also?

Any info greatly appreciated.

Mike,
You might want to contact the Busse Shop direct on this. It would probably need to be discussed with Jerry or Dave so they could give you the appropriate cost and time-frame for completion. I hope this helps :D
The email address is: info@bussecombat.com
and their phone number is: 419-923-6471

Mike,

I'd be interested in what you find out, as I've considered doing the exact same thing on my BA-E.

Thanks,

James

$200

... But you get to keep the brand new Delta B.O.S.S. (Bench Oscillating Spindle Sander) for your shop. :)

Seriously, if you have a oscillating spindle sander you can use it to create or enlarge a choil. You could also use an adjustable speed Dremel (or non-adjustable with a Foredom foot control) to grind it out as well. Just go slow & easy. If you're into hand tools, you could try files, diamond rod, or a cylindrical stone to grind it out.

If you have a buddy who works in a machine shop or auto body shop, you could probably get it done pretty cheaply. Otherwise, call some local machine shops & get quotes from them to do the job.

Be careful with adding a choil. Jerry is about the only person I'd trust to do that to my Busse knife since doing so could completely jack up your heat treat. And if you make your knife brittle at the base it could snap easy when choping.

Cool idea.
I read this, and ran out in the garage, slapped the Basic 5 in a vise, and put the Dremel to it.
Took it slow, never let it get hot (doused it several times with water, even though it wasn't even too hot to touch). Spent about ten minutes on it, and made a quick scan. May make it deeper. Have to round the edges off, too.
I ordered my B5 from 1sks awhile back, and for some unknown reason, got one with serrations. Decided I didn't like them, but I rarely use that part of the blade anyway, sooo.....

Okay, I took a file to my Basic #5, and enlarged the choil. It made sure to take it slow and easy to avoid any kind of heat problems, and now I like it much better.

Forgot to put this up after I finished it.
Ground the groove a little deeper, beveled the edges, and rounded anything and everything that felt uncomfortable.
I like it.
