I piked up 2 add-a-leaf springs on a job recently and I'd like some help on determining what type of steel it is. They are not more than a few years old and they dont have any stamped on numbers, just painted on ones. Non of which look like a steel type to me.

I know spring steel types can vary a bit, so you cant just HT all spring steel the same way. I pan on using this steel for machetes or random bush craft knife ideas I have. So top notch quality is not necessarily needed.

Do you have extra material? Maybe the only way to know for sure is to send a piece to a metallurgist for destructive testing.

I could, I have 2 whole springs. But as what cost?? I acquired them for free and I'd rather not ruin a good thing by spending money on it now :)

I thought spring steel is usually 5160. Good stuff for springs & good stuff for knives. Thats what HI use truck springs for their Kuhkri's.

I dont know what springs these are for but they look like add a leaf springs. I dont even know who made them, any and all identification on them is what I showed...sorry but thats all I have.

Most of the Balisongs that came out of the Philippines for decades were made from leaf springs. Back in the 80's I visited a couple of the 'Factories' (What a joke of a name) while I was stationed in the PI. They all had a pile of rusty old leaf springs that was their feed stock. The knives that they produced were DEFINATELY not stainless, but good steel none the less.
