Add a new coating?

I have a Smith And Wesson H.R.T fixed blade with alot of chips in the coating. I relize it's a cheapo but i like the design. Instead of trying to match the coating, if i were to strip it off and put another coating on it, what should i use? possibly some type of paint?

Anything you put on will likely come off.

A coating such as Gun Kote is readily available and should provide reasonble durability and protection.
