Adding a detent to a Boa?

I just pulled out the speedsafe from my Boa and I actually really like it. My Boa was never really that fast opening up with the A/O and I've kindof grown out of speedsafe honestly. I didn't really mind it on this knife, but I think it'd be cool to try it out without the speedsafe for a while. I know the liner lock bar has a small ball bearing on it, but there is no hole in the blade for it to drop into when the blade is closed. Would it be possible to take a drill and make a small dip in the blade where this bearing would drop into when closed? Since I won't be drilling very deep, will a regular drill bit work? Has anyone done this before?

should work or maybe a metal hole punch would do it. maybe you can try tightening the pivot screw a bit, just enough squeeze to keep the blade shut, yet loose enough to open.

I would check the detent ball. It's most likely a 1/16" ball. You can pick up a carbide drill bit, I'll find the exact size for you in a bit. Anyway, the carbide bit will be able to put a divot in the hardened steel for the ball to sit in. Be extremely careful when lining it up though, you only get one shot!

What is the blade steel? Some Boa's were either s60v or s90v. I can't remember which. I think those would be a lot harder to drill than the S30v ones.

I'm sure it can be done though, but I think the placement and execution are going to be harder then you think.

It's s30v and ya the placement is going to be difficult. I might put it together without the alluminum scale on the locking side and stick a pencil in the lock bar slit and get a line of how it closes, then measure the distance from where it stops to the hole for the ball bearing and give it a shot. Would a standard high speed drill bit be enough just to drill a hole a few thousandths deep? Not sure I wanna buy a carbide drill bit as they can be pricey and hard to find.
