Adding a liner lock to a Case Sodbuster

I really like the Case XX Sodbuster especially since they reintroduced the large yellow models with cv steel. The only downside is that I'd prefer it to be a lockback. Linerlock would be ok too just something to guard against slamming the knife shut on your fingers while cleaning fish, deer, or etc.

Any idea on what it would cost to add this feature or how hard it would be to have it done?

Thanks,

SW

That is probably along the lines of asking to put a Corvette suspension in my Z71. It wasn't ever meant to have one. It doesn't fit. And nothing even comes close to being feasible about it. Sorry man, I know that isn't the answer you wanted, but I don't think there are any others.

Anything can be done but the cost would not be practical for the price of the knife. Why not look into the Queen lockback Sodbuster in micarta that they put out this year. It has the lockback you prefer and comes in D2 with very nice Micarta scales. Just a thought.

Yes, and no. Case did feature a linerlock version of the Sod Buster some years ago, most during the '70s/'80s. Look for pattern numbers 2138L (black, large version) and 3138L (yellow, large version). May've only been available in stainless steel (add 'SS' to the pattern number designations), but I don't remember at the moment. I'd think this would be the far simpler way to attain one; they're still out there on the secondary market.

A non-locking version would have to be completely torn down and rebuilt, to make it into a locking version. Don't think there's any inexpensive way to do this, considering the current new Sod Buster is priced at maybe $30 or so. If going to such great lengths, it'd be more worthwhile to have a custom maker build one to your specs.

I don't think you could make it into a lockback since the tang of the blade was not machined for that, so it depends if there is enough extra material to remove for the lock to engage and operate properly. You could however add a linerlock in the manner that GEC does on some of their models, just need to take it apart and add an extra liner but it will jut out from the handle a bit changing the ergonomics.
