Adding a swedge (sharpened) to a DSSF

Hello all,
After having searched the forum and coming up short, I thought I'd pose a question to anyone interested enough to answer. I'm the proud owner of a DSSF, and as much as I love the knife as is, I was thinking about making an alteration or two. The most significant alteration I was considering was adding a very small convex-edge sharpened swedge (1/4 to 1/3 of the back of the blade). I was curious as to the forum's general opinion as to such a change. Would it negatively affect tip strength to such a degree that it would be unwise? Has anyone had successful results in adding a swedge to the DSSF (or any other Busse)? Other thoughts?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello & welcome, Jason. :)

First and foremost, any alteration of the blade by anyone other than the Busse Custom Shop would void your knife's warranty. Conveniently, they are also the best to talk to concerning any proposed modification's negative effects to the knife. I definitely suggest calling them to talk about your ideas for your DSSF. :) ...As for adding a swedge, they've done that before...and then some.

Welcome aboard Brother and like Jaxx say's, just contact the shop and they can help you out. Whether it's a recoat, regrip, satin or regrind, they can help ya out!!!

Just got done shooting them a message via their website. I should have gone there first (duh moment on my part). Thank you guys for steering me in the correct direction!

IMHO, the admonition by Jaxx can be narrowed a little. If a non-shop alteration leads to a failure of the altered area, then the warranty does not apply. So, if you alter the scales, and the edge of the knife were to chip in use, then the warranty still should apply, as you have not affected that portion of the knife. I tend to thin out the edges on my Busse knives with a HF belt grinder, so I assume that I own my own warranty on the edge.

Putting a swedge on a blade outside the shop is perhaps a tricky thing. Jerry has posted here that INFI can take rather high temperatures before the steel's temper is damaged, on the order of 900F. Grinding in a swedge will probably not reach those temps, but of course one can't be 100% certain of that. I intend to mod my SARSquatch with a clip point, cuz they just look so good, and I will have no concerns about hurting the steel.

If you want to pay Shop rates for alteration, then none of this matters.

If you are a DIY kinda guy, go for it.

I have a few other mods in mind (new handle, refinish, and a small guard on the bottom) - so I just messaged the shop about all of them just to get an idea of price. I'm very curious to see what they come back with.

the pics are working now! That's a great looking knife! did you do the stripping of the finish yourself? I'm thinking about stripping mine before sending it in.

nope i purchased it like that awhile ago it came modded like that. I believe the owner before me sent it back to busse for them to do it (not %100)

Crazy question for you kydex sheath makers.

Seeing as how my dssf has the swedge would it still fit a normal molded kydex sheath just fine or would it have to be molded to my knife seeing ashow it has the sharpened quarter swedge?

I would need to be sent in to me and the sheath will take about 6 to 9 months to make ;)

Just kidding it should be fine in a regular DSSF sheath because of how long those things are :)
