Ive been happily using my Leatherman Skeletool CX for a few months now but ive been thinking almost since i got it that making it a fully serrated blade would make it a more "heavy duty" tool, i already carry a PE knife whenever i carry the skeletool so i thought adding a pocketsaw to the mix would be a good idea

so, should i go for it? Yay or Nay

if Nay could you put a lil explanation on the pros and cons?

Cheers!

I really like my CX. However, my biggest gripe is that it is only available in combo edge. Why they wasted such great steel to bugger it up with teeth, I'll never know:barf: That said, I think that a fully serrated edge makes more sense than a combo.

Are you thinking about grinding teeth into the blade? If that's the case, you might think about taking a serrated blade off another tool, modding it, and keeping the nice CX blade aside in case you change your mind. You might be able to find an old Wave pretty cheap or even mod a serrated SOG multi-tool blade to fit in there. It would take quite a bit of grinding and work, i would think.

Let us know what you decide and post pics if you go through with it:)

Have you used a serrated edge as a saw before? Many people that see a serrated edge think that it saws very well based on shape, but in my experience that is not an optimal use for this edge as it binds into the cut when used as a saw, where the serrated edge shines on cutting tough fibrous materials, or cutting better with a dull edge . If that is all you are looking for then that is your choice, but if you are looking for a small saw I would rather recommend a Swiss Army Knife with a saw- they are small, cheap and very efficient.

Glad to hear the good reviews regarding the CX because I just bought one. Hope it shows up today. I have an old Supertool and a Blast as well as a Micra. They have all been excellent for me. I am hoping the CX will be just as good. As for the OP's question, I happen to like the combo edge on knives I use for daily duties and work related task. So I would leave it be...

i too love combo edge blades, but the Plain edge portion on my skeletool has becom rather dull, and i was thinking of getting teeth ground in because the skeletools main job nowadays is rope cutting. also ive been carrying a BM minigrip PE for some time now and i find that all of my plain edge tasks go to the grip rather than the skeletool.

also id be getting the work done professionally so i don't Screw it up to much:)

at the moment the brunt of the decision is based on how much it will cost me.

Cheers!
