Adding Serrations to a Hardened Blade

I've had a few requests to do this for people lately. I've done alot of serrations while making new knives, but to tell you the truth, I've never tried it before on a hardened blade. I decided to give it a go using my dremmell tool, a 3/16" chainsaw sharpening stone, and a steady hand.

My first test was on a scrap piece of blade, leftover from a butcher's knife to fillet knife conversion I did last week. The steel is HC steel, not stainless. I liked the results, so, the second test was on my own EDC. Its made from O-1 tool steel tempered to ~Rc 60. This is one of my Clip Point Utilities. Yea, it looks beat up I know! Its one of the ones I really tested the hell out of and it shows! It gets used alot as you can see.

During the grinding process I just went slow, and kept feeling the steel with my thumb, never allowing it to get hotter than I could comfortably touch. That really wasn't a problem as it hardly heated up at all.

I like the addition of the serrations. All in all it was pretty easy to do too. After grinding the serrations in, I touched up both the plain and serrated edges on my Sharpmaker. BIG difference! These new serrations can really cut!

Thanks for looking and good luck!

I just purchased smaller and larger size stones this morning. Now I can stagger the sizes 1 lg, 2 sm, or just do all large. I've found these dremmel stones in 5/32, 3/16, and 7/32. They're not cheap though. I just paid almost $7.00 for a set of two. From yesterday's test, it looks like I'll get 2-3 sets of serrations per stone.

Has anyone else tried this with success????

Man, I get all my dremmel tips from a site called Widget supply I don't know, for serrations you could go for the diamond cutters (not more than $1.50 each) or the stone cutters (silicon carbide stone grinders about $1.30 each)

Look for specials!!! You can sometimes get 6 or 10 for the price of one!
Right now I am looking at a 20pc 240 Grit Diamond Burr Set, 3/32 inch Shank. For use with Dremel Rotary Tools and its only $2.97!
do the math, its like 14 cents each!

Scott,
Try the carbide burrs for the dremel. They are expensive but last a LONG time!

I have one that I use to put the smaller serrations in and use the 1/2" wheel on the grinder for the larger serrations.

I have done a few large slicers with 1/2" and 3/4" serrations and they are very good slicers.
