Adding spacers to my 810 Contego

I wanted to remove the glass breaker from my Contego because it was pokey, so I ordered some spacers from knife kits.

The spacer width is .190 and knifekits.com sells a few different ones. the ones pictured are "THESE".

It was very simple. I just unscrewed the old screws, slid out the threaded spacers that come from the other side, and removed the glass breaker. Then when I installed the new spacers I found that the included 2-56 screws were to long, so I ground a little off of them on a belt grinder. I didn't want them too short. I wanted the maximum amount of threads I could get so I checked as I went. I reassembled the knife with lock-tite and left it to dry.

No more glass breaker and I think it looks better. It also didn't affect the knife as far as centering or handle strength.

I definately prefer that look. I'm going to do that when I get a set of Micarta scales for my Contego.

I dont have grinders or sanders... could you possibly tell me what size screws will fit this modification perfect so i dont have to modify the screws?

Hope you don't mind me coming in to ask a question: is your Contego snappy to open? My only other BM is a Rift and that's pretty snappy. I'm not sure if it's just my technique or because the Contego is longer / heavier.

My Contego is not as snappy as my Rift. I think it is the weight of the blade, but if I pull back on the axis it falls open better than my rift.

I will make some measurements this afternoon and get back to you on the screw length.

If you hold your 810 (closed) with the blade up you can snap it out with the right wrist movement. Plenty of knives will do it, but the weight of the blade on the Conti makes it a snap (zing!). Also, the lock is plenty strong for the technique.

Same with the 275. The weight of the larger blade is what makes it so easy to do.

I'm happy enough now with how it flicks open with the thumb stud. :-)

I also like how it snaps shut by pulling back on the axis lock and letting go at the right moment.

But thanks for showing me another way.
