Adding standoffs

I have been going crazy looking for a way to get this done. In the picture there is a large space to the left of the last standoff. I want to add two more in that area.

I know the distance between the standoffs on center and I know the dimension off the side of the scale. I just need someone to drill two clearance holes to accommodate a 2-56 counter sunk. Actually four clearance holes as there are two sides.

But if its in a mill you'd be able to go straight through both sides. Is there anyone who does that kind of work on the forums here? I checked locally and I even considered using a battery drill but I know how that would turn out. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm really obsessed with getting this done. You have no idea.

Take the knife apart and mark on on the handle where you want the other two stand-offs. Lay the side on a drill press with the flat liner down and drill the two clearance holes. Take the other half and mate it up using pins in a few existing holes. Now use the holes you drilled to guide you in drilling the opposite side. Chamfer the four holes and assemble. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Markesharp. The thing is, I don't have a drill press. I have a battery drill and there is no way I'm attempting that.

I already have the dimensions of the through holes on center. They are 23/32 (.718) inches apart on center. They are 3/16 (.187) off the edge of the scale.

Believe it or not, I looked up Knife makers in Florida. I didn't know there was a Florida Knifemakers Association. I found a guy who lives in my town who has been building knives for 30 years. I dropped him an email earlier and I didn't know what to expect. He just emailed me back and gave me his cell number.

Florida Knifemakers Association

I gave him a call and he is a great guy. Older gentlemen with a lathe, mill, drill press and all the works right in his garage! He said he'd do that knife for me on Tuesday and that it will not take long at all. He also said he'd do it for nothing!

Man, I am happy! Relieved actually. To finally find someone with the equipment.

I used to work in a machine shop for years. I took it for granted. When you don't have access to the equipment, your hands are tied.

Thanks again Markesharp for your reply. I think I'm alright now though.

Sounds like a pretty awesome guy! Share pics when it's done :D

Quick update. I am really bummed out. I went to see this guy yesterday. I spent a good two hours there looking at all his stuff. He is a really good knife maker by the way. Tom Ivey is his name. I'm not sure if you guys may have heard of him or not but he's got some really nice knives that he made.

He seems to know nothing of the online world and has a guy on consignment in St Augustine that sells some of his stuff. I am going to take pictures of some of his work and post it here in the very near future. Which leads me to the rest of the update.

He had no bits to drill through titanium or end mills that were the correct size so he said he'd order them. He also said he'd do scales with material he had laying around. Red micarta. I told him to go for it.

So to make a long story short, I'm without my Commander. Been without my Commander since yesterday afternoon. Tom loved the thing too.

He said he'd be done by the first of the week. Whatever in the hell that means. I'm assuming he means Monday? I don't know, I'll give him a call at that time if I don't hear from him before then.

I know drilling through the knife and adding standoffs voids the warranty. So just don't let EmersonRep know. Or Ernie. Don't let on like you know anything. I'm just gonna say it came like that and that's all you guys know too. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

So, when I pick this thing back up I'll get pictures of it and Tom's work as well. It should be very cool indeed and well worth the wait. I'm just so damn lonely without it...I'm going to go sulk.
