Adding thickness to Bussekin grip

Hi folks,

I was fortunate enough to recently pick up a beautiful MountainmanDu here on the forum - thanks, Bladeforums !

The knife is amazing, and while doing knife stuff with it recently realized the handles needed a bit more girth to be comfy.

There’s nothing wrong with the handle that another .125-.150 of spacer material on each side wouldn’t fix.

Is this as simple as drilling out the existing hardware and adding sex screws? Anyone have a reason why I wouldn’t want to do this?

Thanks!

idk how skilled you are?
I assume you want to save the original scales? They look cool, shame to ruin them.

I'd recommend wrapping some tape. I use black silicone tape around the handle. Make sure you like it at that larger size? Use it, see if you like it?
measure the new thickness that you like, in order to replicate it.

Obviously tape up the sharp blade Before you are doing any heavy modifications. You don't want to get hurt!

if you aren't handy, find someone who is...... or sell it, and buy something that fits you better.
The formed stainless wont be that easy to drill out, but it can be done.
slow rpm, steady pressure in a drill press..... use coolant/lube/liquid dish soap, Something.

Nice looking knife btw I Love that blade shape/size.....
and you confirmed what I was wondering about it, saving me the bother...... idk why they put such dinky handles on everything?

Thanks for your input!

I have the same blade, same scales, just thicker stock - and it’s WAAAAY more comfy.

…My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it…

I would prefer to add thickness in the middle, preserving the very grippy existing touch surfaces.

Has anyone converted their Kin blades in a similar fashion ?

Send it in to the Busse Custom Shop! 🤡 If only it were open Garth could make it perfect. I've had a Battle Mistress I've wanted to send in for a scale swap for YEARS! He's done a couple of modifications for me in the past. The Good Ol' Days.

think adding liners wouldnt be too much of a pain.

Think theres a few threads on drilling out the tubes and putting placement fasters too

Hockey Tape...Before going through the trouble of removing the scales and making MAGNUM size replacements try the tape to get an idea of the size and contours of larger scales. It's the cheap easy Fix

The one kin blade I’d like more girth on is my Jackmandu. Liners would definitely look better than hockey tape. I don’t like the screw look vs. the hollow tubes either, but do I really want to buy an arbor press for one blade? Then if I did all that I’d have to redo my kydex sheath as well… So I decided it actually must already be perfect as-is!

Hey PatriotX. I have one that I also wish had thicker handles. I have read some of these threads of others doing theirs for one reason or another. Just haven't done it yet. I would be interested to see your progress. Might you take some pics of the progress?

There will be pics of the entire process, start to finish. If I screw up, there will be pics of that as well…
