Adding your website to all your pics?

I see some people add a watermark to all the pictures they post. I though that it was a good idea at first. Something small and out of the way.
But then I started thinking about how this would be perceived? Even though I would still post pictures for purpose of helping or asking for help, would it be seen as advertisement. I don't really need advertisement as I am not a full time maker but I still thought it would be a nice way to give people who stumble upon a pic a way to know where to learn more.

Does this make any sense and what are your views on the subject?

I say go for it. Something that doesn't take up the whole page or get in the way of seeing your work. I wouldn't call it advertising but more of just letting people know who made it and wehre they can see more of your work.

Thanks Joe. What about tool or shop pics for example? Any pics that doesn't show my knives per say. Does the same apply?

I think something simple like LemeeKnives in a corner of any of your pics would be fine. Even if it doesnt say .com If you google Patrice Lemee or Lemee knives your website is the first link on google search. So even just Patrice Lemee would work if you don't want to put your website as a link. There are a few options, Try a few different ones and post pics to see what looks best. I don't think it would hurt to put it in shop pics either. Your website has good tutorials and information so I would just go for it.

I agree. I think I need to start doing this. Just a small tag line in the corner. along with the copyright symbol and year.

I think it's a very good idea. People copy images and paste them all over the web. You should be recognized for your great work. I just put up my site and put a name on all pics. It's like putting a makers mark on a knife or a signature on a painting.

Any member with Knifemaker or higher membership can do this ( if he wants to). Registered and basic members aren't allowed to advertise, so they should not post watermarked photos with websites imbedded.

Personally, I like the professional look of that type of photo. I certainly think Patrice's knives deserve it.

Thanks for the feedback guys (and the good words :o).

I like the LemeeKnives idea. As you say, the dot com is not needed.
I also like the year idea. As much for me as for people to give an idea of the age of the pic.

As far as a copyright mark is concerned, well I understand what you guys mean but it is very hard to prevent people from using your pictures without putting a large watermark across the whole thing and that defeats the purpose which is to show your work in the best possible light. Plus what I am thinking about is small enough and so out of the way of the main subject that people could easily be cut out if they wanted to. Like I said, I am looking more for a way for people to identify who is this pic, and content, by.

Here is a pic with something I think would be appropriate.

After having done this for many years, you got a nice font and good placement... But...

But your shop looks a bit dusty...
yes I'm gong to run and hide now!!
Que Hola!

Yes Keola, I must apologize for the dirty shop. ;)
Kidding aside, I had just switched the bearings around on my KMG, it is not always that clean. :o ............But close.;)

Perception IS reality.
Reality is not always what people perceive.

lol

Looks good, I might make the font a bit smaller but that is up to you. I like that wild dust collector-o-pus!

Why have a website at all if you're not going to promote it?

A simple name is always best, and having people Google you is nice, but giving them the actual address is much faster and more direct. If you want to sell knives, make it as easy as possible for folks to contact you. If you're proud of your work and want more work, the proper memberships on various forums pays for itself almost instantly.

I use the verdana font to add my website to my pics. It's simple and easy to read. Subtlety is good, but clarity is paramount. Don't create visual confusion.

Any member with Knifemaker or higher membership can do this ( if he wants to). Registered and basic members aren't allowed to advertise, so they should not post watermarked photos with websites imbedded.

That's the only real reason not to do it here... the only other reason might be, if you don't want inquiries and orders.

I put a lot of work and research into my site, and most if not all the questions potential clients might have about my work and philosophy are answered there. I've put a lot of groceries in the cupboard because someone saw a pic with my logo/addy on it, checked out my website, and ordered something different. Keep in mind that your pics will show up in searches, even for the millions of people who never heard of BladeForums.

Same goes for sig lines and sale threads. I got half a dozen new orders in the last week, simply because I showed what I have to offer right now and custom orders that were already sold... thanks, BladeForums!

Daniel, I agree, the font is a little big. I scale it down a bit.

James, Thanks for your input. Just to make sure I am clear, this request was more about pics that, even if knifemaking related, don't necessarily depict my knives per say. Like tools, shop, WIP, etc...

I like the font I used because I find it has a little flair (like the old labels you made yourself) and is still clear enough.

As far as the website addy, I am lucky enough that there are not many (none that I know of) makers named Patrice Lemée. So lemeeknives alone typed in the address bar will produce some kind of link to my websites. I am not even sure that anyone types the www and the .com part anymore. ;)

Here is a pic with the smaller font.

Better?

All kidding aside? NEVER@!!!

Actually I've always like the pics of your shop, all the nickkancks and doodads and whogeewhatzits to make pretty shiny sharp stuffs with!...

As I always like to say, a fool with a tool is still a fool, and you sir are no fool!

As for the font size, I thought the larger was OK for the size of the image, the smaller one is nice too, I guess it's all in what the subject of the picture is.

Did you change the whole flange bearing or just the bearing and kept the mount? How is noise now compared to when the kmg was running well prior to bearing failure?

i should start wate marking but i jsut have not got that far yet

jsut as a letting you know some forums wil say you are subversively advertizing by using a picture that is a link on your website (like look up the propertys to find out ) even if the picture can not be found by non users of your site. no water mark needed

Sorry for the late reply Doc. I did not replace the bearings (yet) just switched them. Noise completely stopped, running as quiet as when I first got it.

Thanks for the heads up Butch.
