The weather sucked today, so I got some stuff down around the house. Milani74 invited me out to camp out at Mistletoe (I can tell you he doesn’t post much because he’s always out backpacking and hiking!), but the in-laws are coming in this week and my wife’s to-do list is bigger than I expected.

Anyways, a little down time and I caught a couple of bluegills with my fly rod and a grasshopper dry-fly. As I was contemplating on filleting up with my BT knife I was wearing, I just didn’t want to make a mess, so I dug around in the drawer of knives and grabbed my old Marbles bird-trout blade. After looking at it, I thought it might make a nice addition to the BT “survival” sheath.

Ed Martin’s outstanding horizontal sheath is set up with a sharpening pouch and firesteel. I found my Goinggear large firesteel with the handle container (holds two large Vaseline/cottonballs) and the excellent Fallkniven DC4 two-sided sharpener (diamond on one side and a very fine ceramic on the other side). I was able to slide the small Bird & Trout in the same pouch as the firesteel. The large inner-tubing bands keep everything snug and secure. I thought it would be too bulky, but it sits well and you can do everything from driving my truck to fly fishing with no discomfort and it’s much easier to access the blade and return it to the sheath.

I found it interesting that the eye of the small Bird & Trout fit perfectly around the snap of the sharpening stone pouch!

Turned out to be a nice little package:

For my first time filleting these small panfish, the Bird & Trout was pretty handy!

Great little knife. I like it a lot. Do you like it better than the Bark River? What differences do you notice?

It's a tough call. I'm not sure how muck I like S30V compared to my Bark River A2. I originally ordered the BT in 1095, but was mistakenly sent the S30V. It's a pain to reprofile and I just don't get the "feedback" when sharpening with A2 or 1095. It's still an excellent design and the handle is flatter than the Bravo-1, but is still hand-filling. Both fit that category size of knife/design use and both have executed it extremely well.

I really need to get out and use it a little more and I plan to. I will say the fit/finish is excellent on Ed Martin's knives and his horizontal sheath system is simply prefect for me.

Thanks ROCK6! I have been admiring it for a while and even considered ordering one. I would definitely get one in 1095 after your comment. The sheath is one I have liked since I first saw it, I have had a sheathmaker make a similar style since it is so versatile.

I have some beeswax and pitch/oil that I want to "harden" it up a little, but I'm really like this style and wear of the horizontal sheath. I know Grylls popularized the sheath style and carry, but it definitely works for me!

That looks like a perfect kit Rock. I love that sheath! Does Ed Martin make the sheath to fit other knives?

On a side note, I stayed out Friday night and Saturday day but a friend called me and said that ATL had severe tornado warnings. I decided to come back in last night as I didnt want to risk the chance of a tree branch falling on my head. The smells of the woods is awesome when it's raining though.

Yeah, I was wondering if you were carving a canoe out there:D It's really a beautiful little spot:thumbup:

I was wondering if Ed would make that style for other knives as I was thinking about that style for my Bravo-1.

That's a SWEET setup.. By far my favorite way to carry a knife when hiking. Easy to access and stealthy enough to avoid unwanted attention.
The JRE horizontal sheath I have for my F1 is not as complex, but it does the job.
It would be nice if someone would make it for Bravo 1. No, wait. It would be AWESOME!
Thanks for sharing.. I want one.
