Hi all,
I thought I would check in here before I potentially tinker with something and regret it later.
I recently acquired a number of vintage Sheffield-made slip joints with a couple of them requiring some "fettling". My definition of serious wobble is considerably different from the sellers that I dealt with but I still was aware that they could use some work and since the price was right, I went ahead and had them sent my way. Both are large slipjoints, one being a pruner and the other being a "rope" knife - the latter having some exquisite Stag so I am very interested in getting it in usable condition if possible.
I am aware of the "hit it with a mallet" or "press in a vice" methods of addressing side to side wobble but since both of these knives have considerable vertical wobble as well when open, I am questioning whether this will require more significant efforts. On the rope knife in particular, I see no wear on the tang or back spring so either it was simply made sloppily or this is indeed just a case of a loose pivot pin.
I thought I'd see if anyone has some thoughts on this before I do anything that is irreversible. I am happy to answer any questions, provide any pictures, etc. - I appreciate any and all input.
Pics of the Rope Knife - you can see why I might want to preserve this one.
