I know this question has probably been asked a hundred times but I couldnt find an answer on the search, only about attaching a ceramic platen.

Any suggestions for what adhesive to use for a graphite platen liner?

When I tried it I used the Duro spray adheasive,It held it on and not tooo much trouble to get off as your gonna be replacing it every few days as it dips out quick.

I recently put a piece of graphite on my sander and used 3M spray adhesive and it worked good. Havnt tried to remove it yet but I guess a little heat from a heat gun would help loosen it ?

A quality double sided carpet tape would likely do the trick, but I wouldn't waste my time with a graphite liner when a ceramic glass liner will last about 100x longer. Longer than hardened steel even...

Just as an FYI, I used a double sided tape for my glass platen liner (along with a shelf on the bottom for support, and it's been working like a charm for months. No issues whatsoever. And when I need to take it off, a little acetone and a scraper will do just fine.

I just did a mod on my 2x42 grinder and I don't plan on using it too much longer. I got 2pcs of graphite I got from Jantz, when these wear out I'm doing the glass.

Can the glass be grinded with ceramic belts?

This is a bit off the subject how to attach graphite canvas. My response will offer you some advice that I have learned about this material. When graphite canvas first hit the market, I was excited, thinking it would solve many of the issues a metal platen presents.....I was very wrong. Graphite canvas (at least for me) created/caused more issue than it solved. Grinding on it will quickly create a "hollow" in the material.
I was never able to completely grind one blade with it in place because of the material wearing away, which constantly changed the platen contour. The wear rate of this material is very fast. Overall I found the material a waste of money, and wound up throwing out 3' of it, and going to glass....and that is still what I am using today.

Yes, I eased the edges of my "pryoceram" platen with a ceramic belt before installing it. It's not difficult to grind and you can put a nice smooth radius on it.

I haven't tried graphite myself and I don't know why anyone would, after hearing these fellows' experiences with it. I've ground a few dozen feet of steel on my ceramic platen (both bevels and profiles) and it's still nice and flat. It's the best $15 or so I ever spent for grinding.

I've ordered a 2x72" grinder (finally!!!), and am interested in these glass platens you all are referring to. Where do you guys get your glass platens? And is going to the glass better than using ceramic tile? The one I'm getting has a metal platen, but I'm planning on adding glass or ceramic to the platen.

Thanks, Stephen.

Thanks, Stephen.

usaknifemaker.com has em in several sizes. I think its the same glass used to make Pyrex.

As for the graphite, I might just skip it for my next knife and just order some glass from usaknifemaker.

Dadgum, I just ordered belts from them two weeks ago (when I ordered the grinder). Hadn't been thinking about the glass platens yet. Shoot

Thanks though, Stephen.

The sander I put the graphite on was intended for wood. being a woodworker I was surprised to hear the negatives about graphite because I have in the past only heard good things about it, so just out of curiosity I went to the woodworkers forum and asked and from the woodworkers there was only positive comments for graphite as a platen material. I will definitely use the glass platen for the knife grinder I plan on building.
