Adhesive question

I'm in the process of making a drop leg hostler for a friends colt Python.

He is a rough and tumble type and wanted a heavy duty leather rig. Since I know him I opted for a kydex lined holster wrapped in leather.

I am going to be doing a pancake style so I can easily attach the straps for it, but have an issue with adhesive to hold the shape of the leather to the kydex

I tried gorilla glue original and it didn't work. Peeled right up with minimal effort.

Is there an adhesive out there that will work without corroding the leather? Some sort of epoxy maybe?

Any advice is helpful as I can't seem to find anything

Thanks

Its not your adhesive, its the surface prep on the kydex.

In order to bond to the leather the kydex must be roughed up a bit. I usually use a very rough sandpaper, but I have heard that the wire wheel on a bench grinder does a good job.

Just make sure to cover the surface of the kydex, leaving a slick spot will let the leather peel off.

I use contact cement on mine, but your gorilla glue should work as well.

Ok awesome. Thanks so much. I figured since the kydex is textured already it would be ok. I will have to rough it up more. I just don't want it coming apart around the wheel where it sits in place since I won't be stitching there

Thanks for the help

Your welcome. :)

The texture is molded into the kydex so its still slick with nothing for the glue to grab onto. You need that "tooth" from sanding to give it something to hold to. Same goes for the skin side of leather, just to a somewhat lesser extent, glue will stick just not nearly as good as when you rough it up.
