Adjust a toaster Oven?

Picked up a Toaster Oven at a garage sale that looked OK. Checked the temp with a separate thermometer that I know is good and the temp is off 150 (low )degrees at 500. Can these be adjusted. Just wondering if it's worth tearing apart? It's a bit bigger than the oven I'm using so it would be better for larger blades.

The easiest thing to do is just verify the oven temps at different settings and record them. That way the temp the oven is set at doesn't matter as long as you know what the actual temp is. If the oven temp is 300 when it is set to 450, just record that 450 is actually 300. You can easily figure your temps without having to work on the oven.

I just remarked the settings on the dial for the actual temp, I just set the dial to the new reading and still use a small thermomenter to check actual temp. I drilled a hole through the side and slip a dial thermomentor through the hole. I drilled the hole just a little above the rack to get the temp at blade level.

I realise I can mark the lower temp, but if I need 450 degrees that won't matter much. What I want is to adjust the temp up if that's possible.

I am frugal or as my wife says "cheap". I found that by shopping yard sales you can buy a good toaster oven for $5-$7 . Then for another $5.95 at wally world you can get an oven thermometer .This may be a cheaper option than a new potentiometer for your existing oven. I also lined mine with insuwool. Its actually within 5 deg. of the dial. One thing to check is the position of the thermomiter thing that reads the temp inside the oven ( the thing that works like a thermostate to tell the oven when its at temp). If its to close to the heating elements it can cause the oven to not reach temp. Had to adjust mine away from the element closer to center of the oven. Hope this helps.
Or a new one is around $50.00

Some of them have a small screw inside the stem of the knob. If yours has one then that's how you calibrate it.

Whoopie. Got it up to 550. I just made a shield of aluminum foil for the sensor. Looks like it's going to work fine. Love the larger size. Will keep my smaller one for backup. Thanks for the tip.

Insulate the whole oven with a layer of Insu-wool or just plain water heater blanket. Put a piece of thermal mass in the oven ( a piece of 1/2" plate). Use a good external thermometer (cheap PID will work). The dial can usually be adjusted with the calibration screw, if there is one.

Once you have the oven able to maintain a more even temperature.....

The best setup is to just wire the oven to run full blast all the time (replace the control switch with an on/off switch) and use the PID and a SSCR to control the heat at a preset exact temperature.

Stacy - I assume a "PID and SSCR" assembly is some kind of thermostat... what exactly, and where can one get it?

thanks

Stacy, I'm assuming you're saying wrap the outside with insulation? Dumb question, the inside wouldn't work with the elements:o
