I'm a newbie to this forum, but not forums in general. I tried searching. But that's not working for me. All searches result in blank pages. So, I'll post:

Is there any way to adjust the clip tension on a pocket folder? I've just got a steal on a benchmade mini griptillian at REI (thanks to the member rebate and 20% off coupon) but the pocket clip seems really strong compared to my old knife. It could be that the old clip just loosened after 9 years, I don't remember what it was like new.

Moved from traditional. Clips we don't need no stinkin' clips on traditional knives. :D
Welcome to BFC kbyrd. These guys might have ideas.

You could take it off and slightly bend it.

That was my first thought, but I'm a knife newbie (I think about a new pocket knife every 8-10 years or so apparently) and I was hoping I the experts here would have something better than my first idea. Do these break in? The clip on Spyderco this replaced worked fine, but it didn't seem this tough. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

You could also slightly bend it with it still on the knife, I was thinking bending it tighter, which you would have to take it off for.

You could wait until it catches on a wall or something, that'll pull on it and loosen it up :)

There are a couple of factors at work with your knife.
First, it is new. the clip Will be tight. Many (especially on BF) recommend using the "deck of cards" trick. The clip will loosen a little over time, but you may wish to speed it up a bit. When not carrying the knife, Put a few playing cards between the clip and scales. It will "stretch" the clip slightly. You can always increase the number of cards until the tension suits you.
Second: It's a Griptilian. The scales are EXTREMELY aggressive. Some people even complain that they tear up pants pockets. If thats the case, you can remove the clip and File/sand the points on the scales.

Good luck and Welcome to Blade Forums!

I'd leave it. It might be tight at first, making getting it into your pocket a little tougher but it will definately loosen up. There isnt a knife i own that has a clip that is as tight as the day i got it (i wish they were). The skeleton clip on my socom elite got a 45 degree bend from getting caught on a mattress i was moving and hasnt been the same since. Similar situation with the leek. If you are concerned about wearing out your pants then the playing card trick is a good one, but i'd rather replace pants than a knife

That's the moment of clarity right there. The pants won't last as long as the knife anyway, no sense in optimizing for the wrong thing. No disrespect meant to the other answers I got, they were all helpful. This one just hit me with "off course! I'm being an idiot!"
