Adjusting Back Lock Tension? I want it Stronger

Hello all!

I received a Buck Ranger TRX, and the back lock spring/tension is slightly too weak for my liking, especially with a tip up carry, and I anticipate it loosening up even more as I break it in.

Is there any way to strengthen the tension exerted by the lock spring? Or is there anywhere I can purchase a stronger lock spring?

Thanks!

You have to adjust the torsion bar against the rocker bar. Not so easy, but can be done.

Edit to add that the Ranger being pinned construction will be a problem unless you feel like drilling out the pins. I'd send back to Buck.

Bending a spring is dicey work. It might go well, or it might go very badly, which might void the warranty.

I'd recommend contacting Buck and telling them you have a safety concern regarding the knife and the spring tension.

Luckily, the Ranger TRX is screwed together instead of pinned, so I could get it apart easy enough.

It's not a problem with the knife per se, more of a preference on my part. It functions fine and is as strong as most of my other back locks, but with the tip up carry, I would like it to be even stronger seeing as I sometimes carry IWB. It's not Buck's problem as it functions as designed.

I may have to try to bend it myself or source a stronger replacement.

I’ve bent/adjusted plenty of springs.

I’d suggest you place the spring on some paper and draw an outline around it.

Then work slowly to increase the bend in the spring. Ideally a vice and pliers, but a couple of pliers will do. Check the angle frequently against your outline and once you see it has bent a little, partially re-assemble to check for tension. You probably won’t need to move the steel much at all…
