Adjusting Ball Chain on Gaunt Neck Knife

I just received my Polkowski Gaunt neck knife and trainer after over a year's wait.

It is a nice minimalist neck knife. As received, the knife hangs down past my belt line. How far down should the bottom of the handle reach? Also what is the best way to cut the ball chain?

Hey Axel,

If you have to ask these questions, maybe this is too much knife for you....just kidding

I usually carry neck knives on chains that are barely large enough to fit around my head. By doing so the knife doesn't move around as much and I can still remove it quickly.

Just use a pair of wirecutters or pliers to cut the chain. Remember while sizing it that you can always cut more chain, but you can't add more chain if you cut too much.

Hope this helps...

Axel Yup, Just as Owl said, I always get the chain just as short as I can and it still fit around my neck. Even that short the guant still hangs down pretty far because the knife and sheath together are quite long for a neck knife, Probable 7 1/2 to 8 inches overall. I own 2 of the guants and like them very much and they do lay very flat on the chest so they do not print hardly at all. I acually don`t use the ball chain at all on mine because I like black paracord better. I take the inner strands out of the cord which is very easy to do. When you bend sideways with the ballchain it tends to slip through the rivet holes in the sheath and is noisy. Also the paracord just fills better arount my neck, a warmer feeling. By the way those knives have excellent balance, have you noticed? The only problem I have with Al`s knives is that the ones I have owned (3) are not really hair popping sharp and the points are not very sharp. Of course that can be fixed in short order. Enjoy them.

A pair of scissors can cut the chain also. Glad you finally received your knife. One year is a pretty good turn around.

Cheers,
Damon

Thanks everyone. I'll trim it down so that I can just slip it over my head. I could have just winged it, but I thought that I should take advantage of the experience of those who have done it before.

Damon, I put the order in back in Aug of last year. I'm still waiting on my Scorpion trainer. I haven't heard from Al yet. I hope he can do it soon.

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'd like to give my opinion of the Gaunt.

I have 5 Polkowski knives that I have purchased from Al over the past 2-3 years. One is a Kasper Gaunt neck knife.

I love this knife. It goes with me everywhere. I especially like the Kasper designed handle. I have other neck knives, but none are so concealable or give me as secure a grip as the Gaunt.

All my knives from Al are top quality in design and workmanship.

Axel,

If you want to keep the sheath from moving around too much on the chain, place the connector between the two eyelets on the sheath. this limits the amount of traveling it can do.

Mike,

Thanks for the advice. However, the connector is small enough to easily move through the eyelets in the sheath.

Axel,

Another trick is to "sleeve" the chain with paracord with the guts removed and melt the ends close to the connector. Chain can still break if need be and will release. One of my clients likes to use 1/4" silicone fish tank hose for a chain sleeve. Increases comfort, cuts down on chain noise,

Mike,

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll consider them. I guess I could also look for larger ball chain where the connector would be too large to fit through the eyelets. Who would sell larger "ball" ball chain?

Axel

Axel,

I use a size up from "dog tag" chain - I think it's #6. Anything bigger is not likely break easily enough to wear around the neck. At least not in stainless steel.
