Adjusting blade centering on MCUSTA Take

When the pivot on my MCUSTA Take Cocobolo is loose enough for super smooth operation, the blade is no longer centered in the knife. I have to tighten it pretty good, to get it close to center (but still far from perfect). And then when I do this, it is a little harder than I'd like to open and close.

Anybody run into this and been able to fix it?

What sort of screw driver is required for these asterick shaped screws on the handle/frame? I'm thinking by loosening these and retightening with the blade centered, I can hopefully fix this.

I don't have a picture of the screws myself, but I found a link online where close up pic's are available (pictures of the screws half way down the page). Hopefully it is okay to post this (another knife forum), if not I will happily remove the link.

If this doesn't work, has anybody sent in a Mcusta for this sort of adjustment? Hopefully to a US address.

Thanks.

The screws are very likely Torx. You can find drivers for these in a lot of places. This one is available at Home Depot for about $6:

I use one of these, it works well. Should have all the sizes you'd need for your knife (T4 thru T10, and also a T15). Many knives commonly use the T6 size for handle screws, and something larger like a T9 for the pivot.

Thanks Obsessed.

I am familiar with Torx screwdrivers, but for some reasons these screws look a bit different. They don't look as "star" like.

I'll experiment tonight with my Torx drivers, but don't want to mess up these screws.

Anybody else with a MCUSTA, who can tell me for sure?

Obsessed with knives is right. Torx is used on mine as well. I also use the set he shows. It's well worth the money.

Somewhere, stashed in a box, I've got an Mcusta MC-1 'Basic Folder' w/white corian handle & damascus blade. I'll see if I can dig it out and check it's screws against my driver. I don't have the Take, but maybe it'll shed a little more light on the screws they use.

Stand by, I'll check back in when I find it...

hmm, good one,i have 2 folders here and the screws look different than any thing i have saw before, they do not look like torx...

I found my Mcusta MC-1 'Basic Folder'. It's handle screws are T6 (Torx), and the pivot is actually a slotted head (go figure ). The screws in the handle fit my Husky Torx T6 bit like a glove (I inspected the fit very closely with a magnifier). At least in this case, I'm confident these screws are definitely Torx.

Thanks for all of the replies. I tried out my torx driver last night and it definately fits. The screws still look different from a normal torx screw, but it worked fine.

I tried loosening, pushing on the frame/handles, re-tightening, and even changing the left and right washers, but was not able to improve on it by much. Maybe just a smidge.

The blade is biased away from the liner. So, the liner lock is definately pushing the blade away from center.

It's definately something I can live with, but perfect centering would something I would really like to have with this otherwise stellar knife.
