Adjusting front sight on a handgun?

I now have two handguns (Sig 238 and S&W 380BG) where the the front sights are not well centered on the frame. It is visible. On both, I consistently get reasonable shot groups (to the left on the S&W and to the right on the Sig).

I need to get my hands on a front sight adjustment tool -- the universal kind that mounts over the slide and then has a knob to push the front sight in the desired direction. I literally need to move these sights about 1mm, or less.

I think I'd posted this inquiry before on G&G. What do I do? I don't particularly have any gunsmiths nearby, in my very gun unfriendly city.

I see some universal adjustment tools online, but they are very pricey. I only need to adjust these things once. Anyone have any recommendations of... gunsmithing rental equipment? Does anyone have a 'smithing tool that I could borrow? Has anyone figured out a way to backyard engineer a solution with conventional tools?

From a quick search it looks like both sites are adjustable for windage with a drift. You should be able to get one at any hardware store. Just make sure it's plastic or brass so it doesn't scratch the finish. a few light taps on that with with a gunsmith hammer (or wood mallet) should do the trick.

Thanks for the idea, Caba. Not a bad one.

I have access to some light tools, however. I have formulated a plan. I'm gonna drill out the holes on some aluminum bar that I can scrounge up. No welding necessary, just need to tap the center hole. I think it'll work.

if a brass drift is not available, I occasionally just slip a piece of .22lr brass over a punch to drift over the sights... a tip if you have fixed sights and need to lower the front... a piece of "mica" laminate glued to the rear 1/3 of a file will allow you to rest the mica on the rear sight without damaging it, and file the front... this gives a slight forward taper, and a cut parallel to the top edge of the rear sight

Remember on the front sight, you are moving the sight in the opposite direction you want the bullets to move

Universal sight pushers generally suck and aren't that universal. The BG380 and the 238 have small slides, I've had to rig methods of using the sight pusher to actually remove something that low.

If they're not in there too tough (BG380s are stiff), you can take a brass punch and a hammer.

I was going to say just use a brass punch and a hammer to drift it a bit to center. Its not that tough to do other than hanging onto the gun and punch and hammer at the same time.

Correct, with front sights, you follow the bullets when adjusting the sights. It shoots left, move the front sight left.
