Adjusting titanium frame lock

A few months ago I got my We Nefaris. The lock bar tension was very strong, the action wasn't smooth so I decided to disassemble the knife, clean it up and put some fresh KPL hoping that will help the knife to break in a bit faster.

A couple of months later and the action became nice and smooth but the lock bar tension was still very strong. Then I disassembled the knife again and slightly bent the lock bar 4-5 times to get the that perfect action without blade being too stiff or off center.

My question is; how much damage did titanium lock bar take after the bending? Did I stress titanium too much?

Other than that, the knife feels great. There's no lock stick, lock rock or anything like that.

Well if it's not wrecked then I guess you didn't wreck it. Titanium as long as it's not overloaded will flex forever without failing.

The rest is just anxiety.

as long as it's not overloaded
That's what I'm worrying about. How much is too much for titanium to start failing?

Every time I bent it, there was some sort of plastic deformation going on I guess.

I'd buy a new scale just in case but I'm afraid We won't sell me that.

"Knife Mod Anxiety"- An affliction exclusive to knife enthusiasts.

Defined as: Worrying that one may have ruined their knife by performing a modification.

😁

But seriously, I'd wager that your knife is just fine, and that it will serve you well for many years, if not decades to come.

Celebrate the fact that it works the way you want it to, and that you were able to make that happen. Don't worry that you may have damaged it (I don't believe that you did).

After all, it really is just a knife. Nothing to stress over.

Modifying a knife often comes with the risk of damaging or ruining it. My motto when it comes to modding knives is- Fortune favors the bold.

Like I said, be happy with the results you got, it sounds like the mod paid off.:)

If you are a worrier by nature, you will worry no matter what. If you are not a worrier, you should use it and not be concerned with permanently over-bending the lockbar.

You didn't bend it enough to damage it at all. I wouldn't give it a second thought.
Yeah that adjustment was minimal, maybe 1mm at the end of the lock bar.

You're right, it's my lack of knowledge inducing anxiety since I don't know much about titanium. Thanks.

Agreed, the knife works and feels great.

The only WE I own is the Nefaris and it does have a strong detent. I've adjusted a few lock bars and it's always a little stressful. I wish there was a tool designed to do the bending and a way to accurately measure the amount of adjustment.

I'd like to see someone comes up with adjustable lock bar or adjustable metal insert. That would be nice.

Yes, the Nefaris has strong tension on the lock bar for some reason. The detent ceramic ball as well as the ball bearings were grinding to hard on the blade for my liking. And if I unscrew the pivot just a bit, the blade is not centered anymore.

I wouldn't worry about it. Titanium is incredibly robust. I've had to bend back a few pocket clips that got snagged. I can assure you, there was a lot more force involved in doing that, and they're doing just fine.
