Some brief comments -

fitzo - Please give us a re-try on S30V. It is tough to cut & reflatten
(brittle). Think we have gotten better at getting it straight.
Shorter might be better.

PeterN - Thanks for your encouraging words.

MikeH - No problem. We had much criticism for a number of problems
coming. We recognize that we are going to have to do better
to be a trusted supplier to the knife making community.

Thank you

Terry

Thank you, Terry. My memory isn't what I'd like it to be, but I thought the last stuff I bought was sold specifically in 6 foot lengths. I need some thin, wide stock to make a few kitchen knives. You don't have the specific size I need listed. I will contact both you and Crucible to see who can supply my needs.

You guys better get your ducks in a row Terry!
I'm gonna be needin some more L6 for my bowies pretty soon. :)

Terry,

I just got a new bar of 1 1/4" x 72 x 3/32 S30V.

Looks like you've changed the shearing method, there isn't as much curve at the edges as previous orders. The bar wasn't completely straight but not bad.

3/32 is .093 but this stuff is more like .120. I suppose that's good because there some deep inclusions. I'm sure thats the way it came from crucible. Isn't there a way you could offer this stuff blanchard ground or something?

Steve

Steve, it IS sold way oversized by Crucible with specific intent of heavy surface removal to final stated size. Crucible/Dallas has arrangements with a local machine shop to get it surface ground if you want. Another point is that the stuff I've bought direct doesn't have those rolled edges, and in 18" lengths, didn't have the warps, either. This is the crux of my complaint with Admiral: they are not supplying the stock sheared anywhere near like you buy direct, and that just shouldn't oughtta be IMO if they want our business.

I hope that surface pitting is not a sign of what's inside. Crucible has had problems with this in S30V in the past. It was "addressed" here a year ago or so in another thread. They quickly made good on it when one fellow forumite complained about what he had received.

Mike, one of the people from crucible posted on another forum that they are in the process of fixing the "pit" problem. Hopefully it will be soon.

Thanks, Mike! Nothing worse than finding those little "pecker tracks" in a near-completed blade when the finish gets nice enough. :)

I've only completed a couple of blades from s30v so far, but have found no voids or pits so far. I got a good deal on odd sized leftovers that were to short to sell otherwise from Crucible. Good people to deal with, have ordered L-6 round bar from them befor, and like was said the s30v come oversized with heavy scale/surface pitting.

Gee guys guess what happened last night. Final finishing an S30V 6" blade and a spot shows up right at the tip! Somebody jinxed me.

Fortunately there's enough blade to reshape the end and be done with it. If if happened in the middle!!!

But that's not an Admiral issue. That's a crucible thing.

I've ordered from Crucible and prefer what I get from them (Straight and clean edges). But if you need it in a hurry, Admiral is the only choice.

Steve

I've seen posts from two makers that don't have the problem with S30V at all.
Both grind slow.
One had the problem initially, had the blade tested professionally and found that his fast grinding was embedding particles which came out on the finish grinds.
He slowed the speed down, and the problem disappeared. :D

Mike,
I'm one that hasn't had the pits with S30V. I think the guy you are talking about was referring to "hot grinding" (annealed, before heat treating). I believe he does it like I do. Grinds cool, after heat treat.

Steve, talk to Scott at Crucible about the problem you had. Of those that mentioned getting pits, as far as I know, none have sent the blades to Crucible so they can see if it really is a problem.

Sorry, Terry, didn't mean to hijack your thread.

The last S30V I needed to order I asked Crucible for 18 inches of 1 1/4 X 5/16. Crucible wanted $100 for the 18 inches. They just don't seem geared up for the small timer. Although I had to buy 6 foot from Terry it was much less than the Crucible price for only 18 inches.

I like dealing with Terry. I get it fast and straight. One of my HT customers did tell me that he received a shipment of D2 and all he got was a empty box because, apparently, one end was not sealed properly. That's a shipping dept. problem and I am postive Terry has already taken care of that.
