I am looking to pick up some 1085 or 1095 or both to start messing around with. Anybody recommend or more importantly not recommend Admiral for this.
I have heard of people having probs with o1 from admiral with alloy banding and such.

Let me know, I would like to get a good batch to start messing with to establish a good baseline.
Thanks
Jon

O-1 is more prone to alloy banding than some other steels so it may be more the steel than the maker.

I have used many pounds of their 1095 over the last ten years, never had a problem with any of it, and their prices are very good.

Never had a problem with any steel from Admiral, I've used 5160, 1095, 01, 1084 and 1075.....so far, so good.

A while back, a forumite had some L6 analyzed that he obtained from Admiral. The steel wasn't what it was supposed to be. Here's a link.

That is not really an indication of their other steels, since others here have praised them, but might be something to think about if you want to try L6 in the future.

I've used a lot of their 1075 CR (sheared from plate).
I had some annalized when a very complicated project failed to behave as expected in HT.
It was way out of range for carbon according to my OLD (1977) ASM manual. I think it was .68 or .69 and the manual says .75 to .78. The new standards have appearantly migrated downward, so the .69 is now considered within range. Guess they don't make steel like they used to.
I'm thinking of getting a piece of 1095 to have annalized. Maybe it's something like 1086.
Did this lower-than-expected carbon level result in my HT difficulties on this project? Don't know, maybe not... but when it comes to choosing material that's going to spend a lot of time in the forge, I'd rather be starting with a little extra carbon versus a little less.

Er, I should clarify my earlier post to say that admiral did indeed take measures to make things right in that situation with the L6, and have since stopped calling it L6.

Having said this (about the 1075 CR from Admiral), let me add that I have since purchased (other) material from them and will probably continue to do so when the need arrises.
BEFORE buying a large lot to replace the 1075, I'll probably spring for independent annalysis of the actual material that is on hand first regardless of who it's from.
I'd really like a reliable source of 1086 CR, not HR, but I haven't found it yet.

JC

If you find a reliable source of 1086 let us all know please. Round, Flat, HR or CR really does not matter to me. Use them all and have good success.. I just really want to try some 1086. I should add that Admiral has done good by me. Use their steel, mostly the 10xx series. Works good for me.

Thanks.

Chuck

Terry Summers at Admiral has been very helpful over the years.
Admiral is very knifemaker friendly and will do their best to help you out.
Also Terry is often at knife shows and makes sure to interface with the makers while there.
I'd recommend Admiral without hesitation, especially once they get some CPM154 in 3/32" in stock.....
