I apologize because it has been a long time since I have posted. Unfortunately I have missed a lot on the forums over the past few months. Even when I have had the chance to log in, I have had very limited time to see what is going on.

Now that I have my apology out of the way, I need a favor. My wife and I would like to adopt a soldier, or do something for a soldiers family for the Holidays. I am sure there have been post about this in the past. What I need are either links to those posts, or suggestions of organizations to use. We live near a large VA hospital and I hope to contact them soon. In the mean time, any suggestions on legit websites or organizations would be great. I know many of you are either active or ex military so I know I can trust this forum.

Thank you in advance for your responses and if active or ex military thank you for your service.

Forever greatful,

Whitt

great thought!

this is the first year in many, i do not have to worry about anyone in particular, over there in the sandbox or surrounding areas...

i was sending care pkgs to a few different areas for a few different Soldiers/Marines.

an extremely good feeling, and the troops DO APPRECIATE all the support!

well done!

The VA hospital...... sounds to me like it would be the best place to look....those are the guys that need the help most.

I agree with rayban. I bet there are a ton of wounded Soldiers and Marines that would love to be somewhere else for the holidays. Your attention would definately boost their morale!

I've got track of approximately 900 soldiers in Kuwait, Iraq, and A'stan. They're in good shape. I really like the idea of supporting the wounded guys.

Well right off the bat there is http://www.adoptaussoldier.org/ or www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ -

There are minor helps like http://www.ustroopcarepackage.com/ or http://soldiersangels.org or even http://www.homesforourtroops.org. Be careful of scams and make sure you "vet" the charity with the military. Contact http://www.va.gov/ for more ideas.

You can also contact the military directly through their websites depending on where they are deployed or based. One of the areas that many people forget about is what RayBan suggests. Our hospitals are full of soldiers incapacited, wounded, recovering and rehabilitating. With IED's being the most likely form of injury it can take years for soldiers to regain full health. You can imagine the toll on a young man's mind and body to be in a hospital.

Let us know what you decide.

Good stuff guys. A few buddies & myself got adopted for Thanksgiving several years ago because we could not afford to go home. It really made for a good holiday.

Its good stuff. On my way out now but we had a Marine vietnam vet who adopted my friend and me. Send great packages and also knew what we needed. People have no idea how much we appreciate that kinda stuff.

If possible try to adopt someone leaving in the field or a patrol base. The guys back in the rear get chow halls, heaters/air con, easy access to email and phone, and the rest. The guys out there patrolling everyday rain or shine. those are the ones that need the big morale booster.

If you are looking for a couple of guys i have just the guys for you. 3 buddies of mine are out in the boondocks of Iraq very close to the Iraq Syria border, and they are hurting for care packages. These are good guys and they deserve some serious support. There Combat Out Post is so far out there are only 2 convoys out there a week. I just got back from there today and they are living rough. If you are interested please pm me and I will be happy to give you there address or email

Everyone here knows we are a firm supporter of the military. With that said, this subject is very much off-topic from the focus of this forum. So, to keep everyone from claiming we are Communists, Socialists and flower child war protesters, we are going to make this a sticky for a couple of weeks but close the thread. Once again, folks, we ask you to keep your posts on topic.

Thanks,

Jeff
